Sony may launch a whopping five new phone models at Mobile World Congress 2017

Mobile World Congress could be a pretty big event for Sony. According to a new report from Japan, the company is set to launch a hefty five new phones during MWC 2017, with that handful of models spanning all price brackets and power brackets.

The report, from Sumaho Info, doesn’t mention specific names for the phones, but it does highlight some specs. And some of those specs are very interesting — one of the phones features the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, directly contradicting reports that we wouldn’t see any Snapdragon 835 phones at the show. Still, it’s possible that the new phone will be announced but not shipped out to customers for a few months.

On top of the new Snapdragon 835, the flagship device will also feature a 3,840 x 2,160 display, either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and a Sony IMX 400 camera sensor. That screen resolution and processor will make the phone perfect for virtual reality, and while there’s no official confirmation that it will be “Daydream ready,” or able to work with Google’s Daydream VR standard, we’re betting that it will be.

Another phone will feature the Snapdragon 835 or 653, along with a 2,560 x 1,440 display, 4GB of RAM, and the same camera sensor — making it a likely candidate for those wanting a near-flagship phone at a decent price.

Next up is a phone code-named Keyaki, which has a full HD 1,920 x 1,080 display, coupled with a MediaTek Helio P20 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage. The rear-facing camera will be 23MP while the front-facing camera will sit at 16MP. Another device, code-named Hinoki, will have the same MediaTek processor, but the display resolution will be downgraded to 1,280 x 720. It will feature 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The phone will have a 16MP rear-facing camera and an 8MP front-facing camera.

It’s expected that the phones will be launched at MWC, but the report also notes that they could be launched throughout the year instead. Only time will tell.

Alleged renders of the Xperia 10 IV have been leaked, and from the looks of it, Sony’s next midrange phone will again put design in the back seat. The aesthetics are not an eyesore by any means, but the design is definitely stale. One might argue with the ‘"if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it" mentality here, as Sony's strategy is just hard to digest at this point. The leaked Sony Xperia 10 IV renders — which come courtesy of @OnLeaks and Zouton — show a phone that looks identical to its predecessor.

The only noticeable change relates to the flat sides on the upcoming device, which veers from the curved side profile on the Xperia 10 III. Apple pulled a similar stunt a couple of years ago. The company took the iPhone 11’s base design, flattened its bulging sides, and created the iPhone 12. It was a lazy design makeover, but Apple also tweaked the camera island’s dimensions, made the lenses look bigger, and introduced some new color. Overall, the change was noticeable.

CES 2022 saw TCL announce two budget handsets for the U.S. market -- the TCL 30 XE 5G and the 30 V 5G. These devices are already on sale and are priced well under the $300 mark. Not content having announced just two budget smartphones this year, TCL seems to be taking Mobile World Congress 2022 as an opportunity to expand its range of affordable smartphones further, this time for Europe and select other markets.

This is why the company, on the sidelines of the 2022 MWC, launched a bunch of affordable smartphones -- all priced below $300. The handsets announced today are part of TCL’s affordable 30 series and include five models: The TCL 30, TCL 30 5G, TCL 30+, TCL 30 SE, and the TCL 30 E.

Nokia completely revamps budget phone lineup, launches 6 new models

Nokia is shaking things up a bit. Its parent company, HMD Global, has announced a total of six new Nokia-branded handsets across three news series of smartphones, with two devices in each series. The new phones will replace Nokia's current budget slate and will set the stage for future Nokia phone series that push into the higher-end. These announcements come alongside the company's new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which it is launching in the U.K.

The lowest-end series is called the C-Series, and its phones will range in price up to around $130. Next is the G-Series, which will have phones ranging between around $110 and $300. Last but not least is the X-Series, which will have phones costing $250. Safe to say, none of these are truly high-end phones.
