Watch out, Samsung! Sony wants in on the phablet market

The line between cell phone and tablets continues to blur, as more and more of these phablets – devices that have the functionality of phones but more resemble the size of tablets – make their way onto the market. Now, according to Gizbot, it looks like Sony is throwing down with a new device that seeks to compete directly with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Rumors have been floating around for a while now, but now it seems that reps from the company are starting to speak out (on the down low, of course. The tablet, called the Togari, is will supposedly sport a 6.4-inch Full HD screen and will come with a stylus (just like the Note!), but it may kick things up a notch and allow people to draw using a run-of-the-mill pencil. (Yes! Those still exist!) We can’t help but appreciate the contrast that would come with the visual of a person using a brand new, top-of-the-line gadget, and operating it with a wooden stick.

On the inside of the phablet, we can expect to see a Snapdragon 600/800, 2GB RAM, 32 GB storage, and a 3500mAh battery. It’s also expected to have 13-megapixel rear-facing and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras.

How long will we have to wait for the phablet to be officially unveiled? Well, we’re not quite sure. The folks at Gizbot have a feeling we’ll have to wait until next year’s CES, but also point out that XperiaBlog has suggested we may even see it the second half of this year. And of course, it’s a bit too early in the game to have concrete pricing speculation, but we imagine it would be priced competitively with the Note 3.
