With the iPhone 6 widely expected to land in the fall, Apple is faced with the usual problem of trying to entice consumers to lay down money for the current version of its handset.

Of course, one way to clear stock in the run up to a new product launch is to slash prices, and that’s exactly what Walmart is reportedly doing today with the iPhone 5S and 5C. The retail giant is expected to begin offering the 16GB model for $99 with a two-year contract (AT&T, Verizon or Sprint), saving buyers $50.

The more wallet-friendly 5C, on the other hand, is getting a $20 discount, leaving it with a $29 price tag. The same contract details apply.

The 32GB models are also set to be reduced, though pricing details aren’t yet available. The offer is in-store only and kicks off at opening time Friday.

Walmart’s price cuts are the latest indication that Apple is on the verge of pulling the wraps off its latest iPhone. Recent reports suggest the Cupertino company will be rolling out two devices with larger displays. Whereas the current model sports a 4-inch screen, the new phones are expected to come with 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens.

While the 4.7-inch device is thought to be ready for a full launch, there have been mixed reports over the state of the 5.5-inch handset, with some suggesting Apple has been experiencing technical difficulties with its production. The most recent news out of Asia, where the phone is manufactured, is that the 5.5-inch model will launch alongside the smaller version in the fall, though it’s still possible it might not arrive until several months later.

iPhone SE 4: news, rumored price, release date, and more
The Apple iPhone SE (2022) and Apple iPhone SE (2020) together.

While the spotlight always seems to be on Apple’s mainline iPhones, the iPhone SE is a great pick for those who are on a budget. If you want an iPhone that doesn't break the bank, the SE is the way to go.

The original iPhone SE came out in 2016, and then Apple revamped it in 2020 and 2022 by giving it some more modern hardware. The iPhone SE tends to get updated every two or so years rather than annually like the traditional iPhone. This means  that we should see a new iPhone SE 4 this year, but it’s not so cut-and-dried with this particular model.
