YouTube unhappy with T-Mobile's Binge On program, accuses carrier of throttling video

YouTube is not happy with T-Mobile’s new “Binge On” service, and has filed a complaint saying the program lowers the quality of all video traffic, even though the video platform is not part of the program.

Unreported throttling is illegal under the Federal Communications Commission’s net neutrality laws, passed earlier in the year.

“Reducing data charges can be good for users, but it doesn’t justify throttling all video services, especially without explicit user consent,” a YouTube spokesperson said to The Wall Street Journal.

Binge On waives data fees for video traffic, in exchange for sub-720p DVD quality video. Twenty-four providers partnered with T-Mobile at launch, including HBO Now, Netflix, and Hulu, with YouTube the only major video provider not joining the program.

One fifth of video traffic comes from YouTube, and that percentage is even higher on mobile. That puts T-Mobile in an awkward situation, especially if the allegations of throttling the video service turn out to be true.

The Internet Association, which YouTube’s parent Alphabet is a part of, said that Binge On “appears to involve throttling of all video traffic, across all data plans, regardless of network congestion.” No other video service unaffiliated to the program has mentioned throttling on T-Mobile’s network.

T-Mobile has not commented on YouTube’s complaint.

Nothing is official right now, however the FCC has sent agency letters to T-Mobile, Comcast, and AT&T regarding the new programs all three companies recently announced. That is a different tone from the one FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler used last month, describing Binge On as “highly competitive and highly innovative.”

Wheeler said the letters were not a formal inquiry, but it might turn into one if the complaints from YouTube and net neutrality advocates are accurate.

Popular YouTubers react to Shorts’ new video remix feature

YouTube introduced Shorts in 2021, months after its release in India. The feature came as an answer to TikTok, which had already taken the world by storm. An overview of the new Shorts feature
The new video sampling feature from YouTube Shorts aims to popularize the service. Also, it is an answer to TikTok’s popular Stitch feature. Through this feature, Shorts creators can splice 1- to 5-second clips from public YouTube videos. When a short is created using clips from long videos, the original creator gets credited via a link. All the videos on YouTube are available for remixing by default. Hence, creators who don't want their videos to be used for the particular feature have to opt out of it manually in YouTube Studio.

Google is killing off its lightweight YouTube Go app

Google is killing off its lightweight YouTube Go app, an app designed for phones with low storage and limited access to robust LTE and 5G networks. The company cites improvements to the mainstream YouTube app that rendered this service redundant. The app will remain available for download in the Play Store until August. The app boiled down YouTube to its essentials and stripped away things that weren't necessary like commenting, posting, or creating videos.

"When we launched YouTube Go in 2016, it was designed for viewers in locations where connectivity, data prices, and low-end devices prevented us from delivering the best experience in the main YouTube app. Since then, YouTube has invested in improvements to the main YouTube app that make it perform better in these environments, while also delivering a better user experience which is inclusive of our entire community," the YouTube team said.
