Twelve people were killed and at least 50 have been shot after a gunman opened fire at an opening midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises film in Aurora, Colorado. The gunman is currently in police custody.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. MDT, the gunman entered the theater through an emergency exit and threw what seemed like a canister of tear gas into the crowd, NBC News reports. Promptly after, he began shooting at the ceiling, then at the seated moviegoers just as a shootout scene occurred in the movie. At least 50 to 60 gunshots were fired. Several children were also present in the theater, and witnesses say they saw at least a few girls under the age of 9 shot in the stomach and cheek.

“It was mass chaos… He was five feet away from me,” witness Jennifer Seeger told TODAY. She recalled the gunman aiming at those who were running for the door. “They’re trying to escape, and he shot those people as well.”

Ten people were found dead inside the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center, while two others died at the hospital, the police chief reports. At least 24 more are currently being treated at a Denver area hospital, with two in critical condition.

“You let your kids go to a late night movie… you never think something like this would happen,” Tammi Stevens, whose son was inside the cinema when the shooting began, told the Denver Post.

Police have identified the suspect as 24-year-old James Holmes who was found near a car behind the theater after it was immediately evacuated. Other than the rifle and two handguns the suspect had on him, authorities also found a gas mask and at least one additional weapon inside his car. Witnesses say they recalled seeing a 6-foot-tall man in a bulletproof vest, riot helmet, and goggles, though it was difficult to tell if that was the gunman since many fans of the movie dressed up in Batman-related costumes for the midnight screening.

The incident is considered the worst shooting in Colorado since the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999 when 12 students were killed and 26 were wounded by teen assailants.

President Barack Obama has been notified of the terror situation, and expresses his condolences. “We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded,” he said in statement. “As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family.”

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
