Binge watch Daredevil, Wilfred, and more of our top 5 shows to stream this week

How networks speed up TV shows to shove more ads in your unsuspecting face

For cord cutters, the anticipation of watching an event live gets transferred over to the weekly dumps of content on the various video streaming platforms. What’s dropping when becomes important knowledge to have, as you organize your queue. If you don’t have time to comb through all the content coming down the series of tubes that make up the Internet, don’t worry — we do. Here are our picks for what you should watch this week.

Marvel’s Daredevil Season 1

Netflix

At some point, Marvel is going to stretch itself too thin. It’s producing blockbuster movies at a breakneck pace, turning out new and improbable franchises that produce absurd return on investments, lining up network TV shows that are better than they often get credit for (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. became a must-watch in season two and Agent Carter was an impressive mini-series). And Marvel is only in phase two of a three-stage plan for, presumably, worldwide screen domination.

The latest entry into its ongoing attempts to absorb all of our free time is Daredevil, a Netflix original series that follows a character who was once so wronged on the big screen. Intent on making things right, the streaming show gives the lawyer by day, crimefighter by night an opportunity to grow and develop. The street-level hero, played by Charlie Cox, is legally blind but uses his senses to make up for his lack of sight. The first season and its 13 episodes drop all at once, so binge to your heart’s content.

Halt and Catch Fire Season 1

Netflix

Halt and Catch Fire did not exactly catch fire critically the way many AMC shows do. While modern day Silicon Valley has been captured on TV (Silicon Valley) and the big screen (The Social Network), Halt and Catch Fire takes things back to the days when personal computers were a oddity. Set in the Silicon Prairie of Texas in 1983, the series presents a fictionalized take on the personal computer revolution as the technology that sent us on the path to today was just being developed.

Groundhog Day

Amazon Prime

Groundhog Day doesn’t need an introduction, but if you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no need to wait any longer. The classic Bill Murray vehicle is now available on Amazon Prime and you should probably just watch it already. In case you need a refresher, the film follows self-absorbed TV weatherman Phil Connors as he finds himself caught in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over again. It’s a surprisingly dark comedy with arguably one of Murray’s best performances.

Wilfred Season 4

Netflix

Wilfred

If you aren’t familiar with Wilfred, the quirky comedy based off an Australian show, here’s the basic premise: It follows Ryan (played by Elijah Wood) and his relationship with his neighbor’s dog Wilfred, who Ryan sees as a grown man in a dog suit. If you’re wondering how that concept has lasted four seasons, then you definitely haven’t seen the show, because it’s a wonderfully dark buddy comedy. Its fourth and final season is now streaming, which means you can power through the entire series. You’ll definitely want to binge once you start it.

Pioneer

There’s little scarier than the unknown, and there are few things less known than the ocean. We’ve barely scratched the surface of the deep blue seas, and the abyss that waits toward the bottom is a fear-inducing idea. In this Norwegian thriller (Netflix currently has a huge influx of foreign films, most of which are worth a watch), an offshore diver named Petter is tasked with helping lay underwater oil pipelines. After an accident in a test drive, Petter tries to learn what went wrong. But the more he searches for answers, the more he’s blocked and smoke screened by those who know the truth.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

Two men spy from a car in The Limey.

As we head toward the end of June, it's worth reflecting on how we want to spend the rest of summer. For some, that's going to mean enjoying nice weather or getting some time in at the beach. For others, it might mean escaping from the heat, at least for a while, to check out a great movie.

If you fall into that second category, then we've pulled together a list of three great, underrated, titles available on Amazon Prime Video that are all worth checking out. Prime Video is home to some of the best movies available online, but it can be hard to find the ones you want. These three will at least give you a great place to start.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
