HBO releases new Game of Thrones teaser and three behind-the-scenes videos

Game of Thrones Season 5: Preview (HBO)
With the fifth-season premiere of Game of Thrones fast approaching, HBO has released yet another teaser for the upcoming season, as well as a trio of video featurettes that offer a sneak peek at the set, weapon designers’ work on the series, and various other behind-the-scenes elements.

Scheduled to debut globally Sunday, April 12, the new season of Game of Thrones is expected to finally bring together some of the individual story arcs that have been unfolding separately over the course of the previous four seasons, and set many of the series’ lead characters on a collision course with each other. George R.R. Martin’s fourth and fifth books in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” series are said to provide much of the inspiration for the new season.

In the behind-the-scenes videos released by HBO, fans can get a look at the international sets for the series that spanned multiple continents, as well as some of the custom-made weapons that will appear in the fifth season. Another video also offers some insight into the set design for the fifth season and some of the new places the upcoming season will take the series.

In a unique approach to the series’ premiere, HBO will broadcast the first episode of the new season of Game of Thrones simultaneously in over 170 countries and territories around the world at 9:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, April 12. Additionally, the North American HBO network, HBO Asia, HBO Canada, HBO Europe, HBO Latin America, HBO Netherlands, and HBO Nordic will all air the episode at the same time that day. The HBO-branded networks will be joined by various “Home of HBO” services internationally in Africa, Australia, Belgium, France, Israel, Germany, New Zealand, and several other regions.

You can watch the new teaser for the fifth season here, as well as all three behind-the-scenes video featurettes.

Daenerys Targaryen with Drogon behind her in Game of Thrones.

HBO has multiple incredible shows. After all, as the cable network's slogan goes, it's not television, it's HBO. However, few of the network's originals can compare to the juggernaut that was Game of Thrones. Developed by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and based on George R. R. Martin's literary saga A Song of Ice and Fire, the show followed multiple feuding noble families struggling to sit on the Iron Throne and rule over the war-torn continent of Westeros.

At its peak, Game of Thrones was the biggest show on Earth, dominating award shows and scoring HBO the biggest ratings in its history. Across eight seasons and 73 episodes, the show shocked, scandalized, and thrilled audiences worldwide, cementing its place among television's greatest achievements. However, even its most devoted fans can't say it remained consistent throughout. Indeed, while some seasons were positively masterful, others were outright embarrassing, proving that when you play the game of thrones, there truly is no middle ground.

HBO drops 2 dueling trailers for House of the Dragon season 2
A man preps for battle in House of the Dragon season 2.

Why weren't there any dragons at the beginning of Game of Thrones? It's largely because of the events depicted in the prequel series, House of the Dragon. Despite having control over the seven kingdoms of Westeros, the Targaryen family just couldn't stop themselves from destroying each other. The march to war unfolded over many years in season 1, but now there's only room for one person on the Iron Throne. The just-released first two trailers for House of the Dragon season 2 invite viewers to pick a side between the Black and the Green.

A woman stands across from a man in Game of Thrones.

Can you believe it's been four years since Game of Thrones concluded its legendary run? While we won't speak about the final season, Game of Thrones remains one of television's most successful shows, with a record 59 Primetime Emmy Awards. Game of Thrones was a "can't-miss" television show, meaning the audience had to tune into the live airing of an episode or risk seeing spoilers on the internet. In the social media age of television, it's rare for a show to have as much power and influence on pop culture as it did.

A select group is unequivocally regarded as the best episodes of Game of Thrones, including Blackwater, Hardhome, The Rains of Castamere (more commonly known as The Red Wedding episode), and The Winds of Winter. For this list, however, we selected the seven most underrated Game of Thrones episodes ever.
