A brief overview of the Alex Murdaugh case

On June 7, 2021, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh were found dead at the family hunting lodge. Both had been shot to death. Paul had been awaiting trial in connection to a 2019 boat crash that left a 19-year-old woman dead, but there was no apparent motive for the murders and no obvious suspects.

On September 4, 2021, Alex Murdaugh, father to Paul and husband to Margaret, was shot in the head, but survived. Three days later, Alex is accused of stealing over $1 million from his law firm. On September 15, police reveal that Alex arranged for his own shooting to capitalize on a $10 million life insurance policy, which he had hoped would go to his surviving son, Richard.

But wait, this tale of murder and corruption only gets weirder. Also on September 15, 2021, the 2018 death of Murdaugh housekeeper Gloria Satterfield is investigated by police officials. Satterfield died at the Murdaugh residence after tripping and falling. Initially ruled as an accident, officials have now exhumed her body to look for traces of foul play.

After at first being indicted on a litany of financial crimes related to his embezzling money from his firm, Alex Murdaugh was at last indicted for the murders of his wife and son on July 14, 2022. His trial started on January 23, 2023 and will continue for a few weeks.

Watch the 2024 Golden Globes live stream: date, time, nominees
A replica of a Golden Globe at the nominations event.

The 2024 awards season kicks off this weekend with the first major ceremony of the year, the 2024 Golden Globes. The Golden Globes are the unofficial starting point on the road to the Oscars, as awards season campaigns will ramp up in the coming weeks. This year marks the 81st edition of the Golden Globes, which will honor films and TV shows from 2023. Stand-up comedian and actor Jo Koy will host the ceremony.

The 2024 Golden Globes will look a little different this year. The ceremony is no longer run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which disbanded in June 2023, nearly one year after a boycott by studios aimed over the HFPA's lack of diversity and practices regarding voters accepting gifts. Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries purchased the HFPA's assets and will control the Golden Globes going forward.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.
