Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailer introduces Kang

Ever since he moved out of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Jonathan Majors has been having a moment. He’s clearly one of the emerging stars in Hollywood with starring turns in the upcoming Devotion and Creed III. And Majors has already made his Marvel Studios debut as He Who Remains, a variant of Kang the Conqueror who appeared in the first-season finale of Loki. Next year, Kang gets his close-up in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as a warm-up to his showdown with the Avengers in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Consequently, Majors has a very memorable appearance in the first trailer for Quantumania. He may even be Scott Lang’s only hope of getting home.

Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania | Official Trailer

Paul Rudd is once again reprising his role as Scott/Ant-Man, and Marvel’s littlest hero may be getting a big head. While it’s true that Scott helped restore half the universe in Avengers: Endgame, he seems happy to ride that glory for as long as possible, much to the annoyance of his family. Unfortunately for the extended Lang and Pym clans, that means they are on a one-way trip to the Quantum Realm itself.

Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet van Dyne was rescued from the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and that experience will surely come in handy here. But Kang isn’t the only threat awaiting this family of superheroes. And that’s why Scott may be seriously considering Kang’s offer, no matter what it costs him.

Evangeline Lilly is also reprising her role as Hope van Dyne, the second Wasp, alongside Michael Douglas as her onscreen father, Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man. Kathryn Newton is taking over the role Scott’s daughter, Cassie Lang, while Randall Park is back as FBI agent Jimmy Woo.

Peyton Reed is directing the third film in the franchise, which was written by Jeff Loveness. Marvel will release Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on Friday, February 17, 2023.

The worst MCU movies ever, ranked
Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Robert Downey Jr. in the poster for Iron Man 3.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in flames. Once the pinnacle of blockbuster entertainment, the MCU is now but a shadow of its former self, struggling to control its increasingly complicated universe while trying to maintain audiences' attention. Following the end of the Infinity Saga, the MCU has produced numerous disappointments, and things don't seem to be looking up for the company's future. The Marvels' low box office performance and lukewarm critical reception only confirm the sorry state the MCU has found itself in.

But these issues are not new. We were so high on the MCU craze throughout the 2010s that we gave it a pass or outright ignored the numerous mediocre efforts. While it's easy to point at Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as the beginning of the end, the truth is the MCU has never been perfect. In fact, many of its projects released during the Infinity Saga are duds that only get worse with age. Some are merely adequate, but the worst MCU movies stand among the all-time worst superhero movies, and it's high time we recognize it.

Disney+ and Hulu drop first trailer for Marvel’s Echo
Alaqua Cox in Echo.

Among the upcoming Marvel Studios original series, Echo has been one of the question marks because its leading character, Maya Lopez, is not a headlining heroine in Marvel's comics. However, the first trailer for Echo has been released by Disney+ and Hulu (which will both stream the series), and the first footage goes a long way towards winning us over by heavily leaning into the show's TV-MA rating. Especially when Maya's former guardian, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), brutally beats a man as Maya looks on.

Bringing back the original Avengers won’t save the MCU
The cast of "The Avengers."

It’s no secret in Hollywood that Marvel Studios is facing some serious issues that are now playing out in a very public way. Although the challenges Marvel has to deal with pale in comparison to the ones that the recently reorganized DC Studios will have to work through, the world’s biggest superhero movie studio simply isn’t the powerhouse that it used to be.

Earlier this week, Variety laid out many of Marvel’s current challenges in great detail, as well as a few plans to reignite the franchise. The report even indicates that there have been discussions about bringing back all of the original Avengers stars for a new sequel. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk never really left the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye was semi-retired even before Renner’s life-threatening accident earlier this year. However, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) were already written out in Avengers: Endgame. Cap got to live out his life in the past, but Iron Man and Black Widow both died on-screen.
