Trailer for Netflix’s The Ranch features Ashton Kutcher (and a laugh track?)

A new comedy series featuring Ashton Kutcher is arriving on Netflix soon. The streamer released the trailer for The Ranch today, introducing the former Two and a Half Men star as a semi-pro football player whose career hasn’t panned out as planned.

The plot follows Kutcher as Colt, the son of a rancher who returns home to help out with the family business. He reunites with his big brother, Jameson (played by Kutcher’s former That ’70s Show co-star Danny Masterson), father Beau (Sam Elliott), and mother Maggie (Debra Winger), but it’s a complicated homecoming — in part because Colt is struggling to let go of his football days, in part because he has been away so long.

Back in Colorado, Colt will have to adjust to the reality of living with his parents. Based on the preview, he’ll have some (literal) misfires as he recalibrates to ranch life, and will also learn the perils of bringing dates home. (Elisha Cutherbert will play Colt’s former flame in a recurring role.) The family dynamics, however, appear to be front and center, providing the main source of entertainment, and accompanied by a laugh track — a very odd choice for a new series, especially one far away from the big networks on Netflix.

The choice to use a multi-camera format is another odd one in TV’s so-called “golden age,” but it’s obvious with shows like Fuller House and a wide variety of children’s programming that Netflix is casting a very wide net with its original series these days. The Ranch appears to be going straight after the network primetime faithful.

In addition to reuniting on screen, Kutcher and Masterson are also executive producers. The two starred as Kelso and Hyde, respectively, on That ’70s Show from 1998 to 2006. Kutcher previously shared a photo of himself with his co-star on Twitter, together again and experiencing “#ranchLife.”

Theirs isn’t the only reunion, though; Don Reo and Jim Patterson, both of whom worked on Two and a Half Men, serve as executive producers on the series as well. The comedy was previously given a straight-to-series order. It marks Kutcher’s first Netflix show.

The Ranch arrives on Netflix on April 1.

7 most controversial Netflix shows ever
A boy looks at a girl in 13 Reasons Why.

Netflix has introduced so many shows since it began producing its own original programming. Some believe that House of Cards was the streaming service’s first original series, it was actually Lilyhammer, a Norwegian comedy crime drama. From there, Netflix shows have run the gamut with favorites like Chef’s Table and shows that have run for multiple seasons, like Grace and Frankie and The Witcher. Lately, however, Netflix has started to become more adventurous, and because of this, its shows have also become more controversial.

In fact, Netflix is behind some of the most controversial TV shows ever, each raising eyebrows for different reasons.

K-pop meets horror in Netflix’s trailer for Mask Girl
The two faces of Mask Girl.

If you don't know who Mask Girl is yet, then you're about to find out. Thanks to the success of Squid Game and other shows, more South Korean series are heading to Netflix this year, including Mask Girl. This show is based on Mae Mi's Mask Girl webcomic, and it follows a woman named Kim Mo-Mi through three different periods in her life. K-pop singer and actress Nana headlines the series as the young Kim Mo-mi, whose natural face remains hidden in the trailer below. Mo-Mi always felt self-conscious about her looks, which is why she adopted her Mask Girl persona and hid her face behind a mask. After plastic surgery, Mo-Mi is stunningly beautiful, but for currently unrevealed reasons, Mo-Mi's alter ego is apparently a murderer who has blood on her hands.

Netflix’s The Chosen One trailer brings forth the Messiah
Bobby Luhnow in The Chosen One.

Imagine growing up as an ordinary child only to discover that you are the long-promised Messiah and the second coming of Jesus Christ. That was the premise of Mark Millar and artist Peter Gross' 2004 comic book series, American Jesus. Later this month, Netflix is premiering the comic's TV series adaptation, which has been renamed The Chosen One. This show is taking some liberties with the original comic by transplanting the story into Mexico and the series itself will largely be in Spanish. But the heart of the story remains, as a young boy named Jodie (Bobby Luhnow) learns that he has divine powers. But those powers come with a price, as well as a legion of enemies who will do anything to make sure that Jodie never fulfills his destiny.
