Many great shows originate from Latin America. They run the gamut from conventional dramas and comedies to the story of a soccer team tied to drug trafficking. Unsurprisingly, Netflix is the home to a wide variety of Latin American shows, so we’ve put together a list of the ones you should watch that are currently available on the streaming platform.
The Secret of the Greco Family (2022)
6.3/10The Secret of the Greco Family is a remake of an Argentinian series that is inspired by a true story. This show centers on a Mexican family that secretly kidnaps members of rich families and holds them for ransom so that they can maintain their wealth and high status. The most relatable character in this series is one of the sons, Andrés Greco, a star polo player who is friends with many of the families’ victims. Played excellently by Manuel Masalva, Andrés is initially reluctant to take part in these heinous acts, but his father’s corruption ends up getting the best of him and he fully commits to the family business. Not everyone may be a fan of the show’s slow-burn approach, but true crime fans will surely get a kick out of it.
The Final Score (2022)
7.2/10Not to be confused with the 2018 action movie that’s currently on Netflix and is also called Final Score, this Colombian miniseries is about the tragic murder of Atlético Nacional’s star player, Andrés Escobar, in 1994 and how major cartels may have been involved. The Final Score illustrates how far-reaching Colombian drug running was in the 1980s and ’90s, to the point where even local soccer teams were affected. Each episode starts with a disclaimer that the show is a “fictional series inspired by fact,” but it will hopefully inspire viewers to learn more about the actual story. Regardless, the series is still engaging in its own right.
The Nutty Boy (2022)
8.8/10Based on the Brazilian comic strip of the same name, The Nutty Boy follows an overly optimistic young kid named Nutty as he partakes in crazy adventures with his friends. This animated series features nine episodes of the titular character engaging in various activities such as staying in a marketplace overnight, learning more about a mysterious statue, and helping his friend seek revenge against her older brothers. Each episode is less than 13 minutes long, so the whole show is easy to binge. And if younger viewers don’t want to read subtitles, the show comes with an English dub as well.
Diary of a Gigolo (2022)
6.5/10Diary of a Gigolo is an Argentinian miniseries about a male gigolo named Emanuel who gets too involved in one of his client’s lives. In addition to featuring steamy sex scenes that one might expect to see in a show like this, Diary of a Gigolo also features an engaging mystery element as it cuts between an investigation and flashbacks involving Emanuel and his client. We also see glimpses of Emanuel’s life in poverty. Speaking of Emanuel, Jesús Castro delivers a great performance as the titular protagonist in addition to looking the part. Some people might even watch this show just for him.
