The indefinite hiatus of Louis C.K.’s comedy Louie shows no signs of ending, but the upcoming series being executive produced by the comedian should help keep his fans content. FX has released the first trailer for Better Things, a comedy from C.K. and his Louie co-star Pamela Adlon that is set to premiere this fall.
The comedy is loosely based on Adlon’s life and she stars as Sam Fox, a struggling actress and divorcée who is raising three daughters alone. As we can see in the trailer, it’s not always smooth sailing at home. She and her daughters come into conflict over a variety of issues, from her love life to whether or not they can be in her room.
The trailer should inspire optimism in those hoping for another hilarious series from the co-creators. Sam’s interactions with her kids, for example, are entertaining without being over the top. A scene of her arguing with one of her daughters, who wants to know what she did to upset her mom, feels like it could be based on almost any family. There are moments in which the vibe is reminiscent of another series that starred Adlon, Showtime’s Californication, albeit with some watering down.
In another scene, Sam’s oldest daughter asks Sam to buy marijuana for her. “Don’t you want me to have clean, organic pot?” she asks.
In addition to Adlon, the series stars Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, and Olivia Edward as Sam’s daughters, and Celia Imrie as her mother, who conveniently lives across the street. The series is executive produced by both Adlon and C.K., along with Blair Breard, Dave Becky, and 3 Arts Entertainment. C.K.’s production company, Pig Newton, produces for FX productions.
Better Things is set for a 10-episode run, starting with its premiere on September 8.
