Wonder what ‘Big Bang Theory’s’ Sheldon was like as a kid? You may find out

Fans of The Big Bang Theory may get to know more about the quirky, highly intelligent but socially awkward physicist and professor Sheldon Cooper, as CBS is reportedly in discussions for a spinoff that would delve into the character’s life as a young boy, reports Deadline.

Before Sheldon, played by Emmy winner Jim Parsons, met Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Howard (Simon Helberg), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), and Amy (Mayim Bialik), he had a fairly humble upbringing in Texas with his family. The Cooper clan included his Evangelical Christian mother, Mary (Laurie Metcalf); twin sister, Missy; alcoholic father, George Sr.; and grandmother, Meemaw, who officially made an appearance on the latest season and was played by June Squibb.

A show centered around arguably the most popular character from the show could be a great way to keep the series going after an eventual cancellation. The Big Bang was last renewed for three more seasons in 2014, so it’s possible that this season, its 10th, will be the last. CBS is reportedly still in talks with Warner Bros TV about the show’s future, and the proposed prequel series is reportedly designed so it could comfortably be on the air at the same time as the original. So don’t put away your superhero T-shirts and science dictionaries just yet.

According to Deadline, the spinoff, called Sheldon, could be a single-camera comedy that focuses on a 12-year-old Sheldon. It may be produced by Chuck Lorre, co-creator and executive producer of The Big Bang Theory, and Steve Molaro (executive producer/showrunner), as well as Parsons himself.

Whether this comes to fruition or not, the project certainly has the ingredients to become a success. Big Bang is consistently ranked as the most-watched program on network television, and Parsons has taken home multiple Emmys for the role. In fact, not only is he currently the highest-paid actor on TV, bringing in a reported $24.5 million in Forbes’ latest rankings, but four of the other core cast members made the top 10 as well, including Johnny Galecki ($24 million), Simon Helberg ($22.5 million), Kunal Nayyar ($22 million), and Kaley Cuoco ($24.5 million).

If CBS finds an actor as endearing (and annoying) as Parsons to play a younger version of Shelson, the prequel concept could help CBS create comedy gold once again.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
