Bill Skarsgård goes full action hero in Boy Kills World trailer

Boy Kills World | Official Red Band Trailer | In theaters April 26

Some of the most memorable roles in Bill Skarsgård’s career have been villains, including Pennywise the Clown in Stephen King’s It and Marquis Vincent de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4. This year, Skarsgård is going full action hero in two movies, including the upcoming reboot of The Crow. But first, Skarsgård has an even wilder turn in the new action flick Boy Kills World, as demonstrated in the red band trailer below.

As you probably noticed from that video, Skarsgård’s Boy is deaf and mute. But his inner voice is brought to life by H. Jon Benjamin, the star of Archer and Bob’s Burgers. The in-story explanation is that Boy took the voice from one of his favorite video games and imagines it as his inner narrator.

Story details are a bit light at the moment, but we know that Boy Kills World takes place in a post-apocalyptic future and that Boy’s family was murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen). Now, with the help of a shaman (Yayan Ruhian), Boy is ready to commit to his bloody path for revenge. However, Boy may have bitten off more than he can chew by bringing a sword to a gunfight.

Moritz Mohr directed the film from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers, which was, in turn, based on a story by Remmers and Mohr.Boy Kills World will hit theaters on Friday, April 26.

A man puts his fists up and prepares for a fight.

We're living through something of an action movie renaissance, which means that it's a great time to be a fan of those kinds of movies. John Wick and the Mission: Impossible franchise have kick-started an entire wave of knockoffs, and while not all of these movies are great, the fact that we're getting so many that have basically nothing to do with superheroes is definitely a good sign.

Boy Kills World is one recent example of a gonzo, irreverent action movie about one man's obsessive drive for revenge. If you saw that movie and felt like you were picking up everything that it put down, we're recommending three more that are just as great ... and almost as bloody.

Boy Kills World’s Dawid Szatarski on making the action movie’s insane fight scenes
A man hangs out with two guys in Boy Kills World.

Revenge is a dish best served ... with a cheese grater? Well, at least that's how the saying goes in Boy Kills World, the new martial arts action-comedy from director Moritz Mohr. Bill Skarsgård stars a Boy, a deaf and mute orphan who vows to kill Hilda van der Koy (Famke Janssen), the leader of an authoritarian regime who murdered his family. Under the tutelage of the mysterious shaman (Yayan Ruhian), Boy becomes a trained killer who will stop at nothing until he has his vengeance.

Boy Kills World is an ultraviolent ride with elaborate fight sequences and vicious kills, including a kitchen duel with that pesky cheese grater. Boy Kills World channels the spirit of John Wick, the martial arts of Korean action movies, the violence of a Street Fighter video game, and the aesthetic of Japanese anime for an action-packed revenge thriller.

Netflix is streaming the craziest action movie of 2024. Here’s why I loved it
A man floating in air kicks another man in the face in City Hunter.

This month seems to be the time to release action movies that color outside the lines. We've already had Dev Patel's Monkey Man, a messy, throw-everything-at-the-wall action movie that blends intricate fight sequences and on-the-nose social commentary in an entertaining package that will surely gain cult status in the near future. Just this weekend, Boy Kills World dished out loads of cartoon violence and over-the-top gore in a bid for John Wick-level fandom. Both movies bend or break the rules of reality to deliver quickly cut fight scenes that push the boundaries of the genre, all in an attempt to one-up the high standards set by the best movies in the Mission: Impossible and Fast and Furious franchises.

Yet the best of the April bunch is the one that has the lowest profile. City Hunter doesn't star anyone you'd recognize like It actor Bill Skarsgård in Boy Kills World and hasn't been backed by an extensive marketing campaign like Universal's Monkey Man. But the movie is a blast; it's like putting Pop Rocks in a can of Mountain Dew and chasing it down with a couple of Pixy Sticks. It's ludicrous, immature, and totally unrealistic. It's also my favorite action movie of 2024. Here's why you need to stream City Hunter pronto.
It's an adaptation of a massively popular franchise
