Bourne 2016 recently started filming, but its cast is still growing. Ato Essandoh is the latest actor to sign on to the still-untitled film, joining a cast that includes Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, and Vincent Cassel.
Whether Essandoh’s character will be a friend or foe of Bourne is anyone’s guess at this point. Plot details are being kept largely under wraps. We do know, however, that Cassel was recently added as a villain and that the influence of government surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden will be seen in the film.
Like Jones, Vikander, and Cassel, the upcoming Bourne film will be the first in the franchise for Essandoh. Bourne 2016 will join a list of film credits for the actor that includes roles in Django Unchained, Blood Diamond, and Garden State. Essandoh currently stars in HBO drama series Vinyl and has previously starred in the BBC America series Copper.
While the Bourne 2016 cast includes a handful of newcomers, key players from the series’ original movies are returning. Damon, of course, is back as the titular character, which is all the more exciting after Universal Pictures made a Jason Bourne-less installment in 2012, The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner. The upcoming film will be the fifth in the series and the fourth with Damon. He last appeared in The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007.
Also back for Bourne 2016 is director Paul Greengrass for the third time. He co-wrote the script with Christopher Rouse. Rouse and Henry Morrison are serving as executive producers, while Greengrass, Damon, Frank Marshall, Jeffrey Weiner, Greg Goodman, and Ben Smith are producing.
The upcoming Bourne movie is expected to hit theaters on July 29, 2016.
