Netflix drops second trailer for Will Smith’s fantasy cop drama ‘Bright’

Netflix has released a second, full-length trailer for Bright, its upcoming original feature that blends cop drama with fantasy in a world of orcs, elves, and other magical creatures.

Not only does the trailer provide quite a bit more footage from the film and its stars, Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, but it also reveals significantly more of the premise behind the unique project.

After releasing a teaser for Bright in February, Netflix finally delivered a full-length trailer for director David Ayer’s film at Comic-Con International in San Diego this year.

Scripted by Chronicle and American Ultra screenwriter Max Landis, Bright is set in a version of the modern world where all manner of fantasy creatures coexist with humans. Two-time Oscar nominee Smith (Men in BlackSuicide Squad) plays a police officer partnered with the department’s first orc cop (played by The Gift and Warrior actor Edgerton), and the pair find themselves caught up in a dangerous adventure when they encounter a young female elf and the powerful magical artifact in her possession.

Landis has compared the film to Ayer’s own gritty cop drama, End of Watch, with the addition of magical elements, and it appears to share something in common with 1988’s Alien Nation, too.

Along with Smith and Edgerton, the film’s cast includes Prometheus actress Noomi Rapace, Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Edgar Ramírez (Carlos), and Lucy Fry (Wolf Creek). Additional supporting cast members include Happy Anderson (The Knick), Kenneth Choi (Sons of Anarchy), Dawn Olivieri (House of Lies), and Andrea Navedo (Jane the Virgin).

Earlier this year, Netflix won a bidding war for the rights to Bright, and the $90 million price tag on the film makes it the most expensive original movie produced by Netflix to date. Landis was paid $3 million for the script — one of the largest deals a writer has received in recent years. The film is subject to a unique deal intended to provide all of the cast members and creative team similar returns to what they would receive on a traditionally distributed film, so Bright has been the subject of significant industry attention in recent months.

Bright will debut on Netflix December 22.

Netflix’s The Chosen One trailer brings forth the Messiah
Bobby Luhnow in The Chosen One.

Imagine growing up as an ordinary child only to discover that you are the long-promised Messiah and the second coming of Jesus Christ. That was the premise of Mark Millar and artist Peter Gross' 2004 comic book series, American Jesus. Later this month, Netflix is premiering the comic's TV series adaptation, which has been renamed The Chosen One. This show is taking some liberties with the original comic by transplanting the story into Mexico and the series itself will largely be in Spanish. But the heart of the story remains, as a young boy named Jodie (Bobby Luhnow) learns that he has divine powers. But those powers come with a price, as well as a legion of enemies who will do anything to make sure that Jodie never fulfills his destiny.

5 fantasy movies on Netflix that are perfect for the summer
Lewis MacDougall as Connor and the monster in A Monster Calls.

Now that August has arrived, the theatrical movies aren't very enticing. Fortunately, Netflix has a number of fantasy films that are worth staying home for. These are the flicks that have already had their chance in the cinema, and we could argue that Conan the Barbarian and Jumanji rank among the best fantasy movies of all time.

There's plenty of action and adventure in Netflix's fantasy lineup, but there's also the emotional drama, A Monster Calls, which is a bit of a tearjerker. Regardless, we can promise that all five of these fantasy movies are perfect for the summer.

A vampire revolution begins in the trailer for Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne
Richter Belmont in Castlevania: Nocturne.

Two years ago, Netflix's Castlevania anime series pulled off a neat trick by giving every main character a happy ending, even Dracula! However, that happiness was never designed to last forever. This fall, the sequel series, Castlevania: Nocturne, will arrive, and it will restart the battle against the children of the night. And while Dracula may be out of the picture, a vampire messiah is prophesized to block out the sun and plunge humanity into a new age of darkness. That means another Belmont will have to take up the family business of hunting vampires.
