Dana Carvey is a straight, white, 60-year-old male in Netflix stand-up special

Dana Carvey | Straight White Male, 60 Trailer [HD] | Netflix
As a comedian best known for his role as Garth in the Wayne’s World movies, for iconic characters like The Church Lady from Saturday Night Live, and his bevy of spot-on impressions, most notably George H.W. Bush, Dana Carvey hasn’t done a ton on the stand-up comedy front of late. Until now. The comedian did two live performances in Boston back in April that were filmed for release on Netflix. And with the launch date looming on Friday, November 4, the streaming service has released a teaser trailer.

The special, called Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60, will focus on plenty of current hot topics, including the presidential election, holidays, religion, and the millennial generation. He’s seen making a reference to Donald Trump in the 1 minute, 43 second trailer, while also discussing everything from sex after 50 to kids and social media. Interestingly, Carvey’s sons opened the show for him, though it’s unclear whether they will be featured in the Netflix cut or not.

Netflix calls the special “unapologetic.” Carvey notes that, as a straight, white, 60-year-old male, the assumption is that he’s “racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, Islamophobic, and misogynistic. “Yep,” he jokes, “pretty much me.”

Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60, joins a number of new and upcoming comedy specials airing on Netflix. Recent releases include Russell Peters: Almost Famous and Joe Rogan: Triggered. Colin Quinn: The New York Story and Michael Che Matters are both also slated for November.

Carvey was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1993, and was very visible during the 1992 presidential election when he often impersonated both Bush and Ross Perot in sketches (the late Phil Hartman played Bill Clinton). He has since returned to host four times, most recently in 2011, as well as appearing on the 40th anniversary special in 2015. He also reprised the role of the Church Lady in an episode earlier this year hosted by Brie Larson. But the comedian has been mostly out of the limelight, spending time with his family. His most recent high-profile credit was voicing the character of Pops in the 2016 animated film The Secret Life of Pets.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
