A live-action movie based on the wildly popular 2009 manga series Attack On Titan has been in the works for a while now, with the project initially announced back in 2011, only to have it change directors, writers, and various other elements of the creative team in the years that followed. The film appears to finally be in a good place, though, as the first images of the cast in costume debuted online this week.
The new images premiered at Japanese-language site Eiga.com (with subsequent re-post and translation via a Tokusatsu Network), and feature the nine primary cast members in full uniform as humanity’s best defense against the monstrous, man-eating titans that threaten the species’ very existence. The film is directed by Shinji Higuchi, who served as VFX director on many of the fan-favorite Godzilla and Gamera films released in the ’90s.
The live-action Attack On Titan stars Miura Haruma as Eren and Mizuhara Kiko as Mikasa, Eren’s adopted sister. Along with many of the primary characters from the manga, it will also feature several new characters created for the film.
Attack On Titan has sold more than 45 million volumes since the first volume hit shelves, and its enormous popularity has spawned an animated series, multiple video games, and an amazing Subaru commercial, among other projects.
There’s no release date set for the film just yet, but they’re expected to premiere at some point in 2015.
