The nominees for the 86th annual Academy Awards have been revealed, with American Hustle, Her, 12 Years a Slave, and Gravity among several films with multiple nominations. The 2014 Oscar winners will be announced during the live show hosted by Ellen DeGeneres on March 2, 2014.

Although every Academy Awards brings with it its share of snubs and surprises, the nominees are fairly close to those seen in the recent Golden Globes. The format of the Golden Globes is different, of course, with twice the nominations in many categories thanks to the multiple film category – namely the “Comedy or Musical” and “Drama” categories. Regardless, you’ll find many of the same names.

3 great (HBO) Max movies to watch instead of the 2024 Oscars
A knight on a horse looks at a council in The Green Knight.

Here's a hard truth: the Oscars aren't for everyone. The speeches, the inane interviews, the chintzy dance numbers -- it's a bloated ceremony that is as off-putting to some people as it is appealing to others.

If you're one of those people who isn't going to be watching the 2024 Oscars, you probably need some suggestions for what to do instead. And you can do worse than watch some movies on Max. You should watch the three movies on the list below. One is a 2023 hit starring a Dune: Part Two lead actor, another is an underrated fantasy, and the last is a modern comedy classic.

From a 2024 fantasy that features a fire-spewing dragon to an underrated comic book movie starring 2024 Oscar nominee Emma Stone, these films are guaranteed to entertain you while you ignore the pomp and circumstance of Hollywood's biggest night.

Oscars 2024: Who is performing at the Academy Awards?
Ryan Gosling performs I'm Just a Ken in Barbie.

It's become a time-honored tradition at the Academy Awards for the tunes nominated for Best Original Song to be performed onstage at the Oscars, often by the very artists who provided their vocals for the film in question. The 96th annual Academy Awards will be no exception, and one of the most anticipated parts of this year's show will be the live performances.

While we can't predict the exact times that the songs will be performed, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the full lineup of artists who will take the stage this Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California.
