The famous heroes in half-shells return to theaters this weekend in director Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the latest clip from the film offers some evidence that the new iteration of the team hasn’t forgotten its roots.

The clip debuted at Yahoo Movies, and features all four Turtles — Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello — racing through a building in pursuit of their arch enemy, Shredder, who’s engaged in some sort of diabolical shenanigans at the very top of the skyscraper. After avoiding a crowd of bad guys, the Turtles end up in an elevator, slowly ascending 50-plus floors. Michelangelo begins tapping out a beat on his nunchucks, and his brothers eventually join in, forming an impromptu beatbox circle. The elevator reaches its destination, the doors open, and the Turtles suddenly switch to attack mode and rush out.

The scene then shifts to their confrontation with Shredder, and the Turtles form up around Leonardo. Raphael asks Michelangelo to say “that thing you used to say when we were kids.” Telling his brother that he’s been “holding it in for years,” Michelangelo screams “Cowabunga!” and the quartet charges toward Shredder.

The brief clip is clearly intended to serve as notice to nervous fans who have voiced concern that the latest iteration of the Turtles may be departing too much from the characters they’re familiar with and the source material — both in comics and cartoons — that made them popular. There’s already been some confirmation of changes made to the Turtles’ origin story, so it remains to be seen if the balance of new elements vs. classic elements will win over audiences.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8.

Where to watch all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies and TV shows
The four TMNT brothers enjoy a lighter moment in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

This week, the TMNT are back in theaters with a new animated movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. This is actually the seventh time that the TMNT have had their own film in theaters. Beyond that, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has had four different animated series, a handful of direct-to-video animated flicks, and even a short-lived live-action TV show. That's a lot for any franchise!

Ahead of the new film, you may want to revisit some of the Turtles from years past. The good news is that the vast majority of these shows and movies are available to stream. And the few that aren't are still on digital outlets for rent or purchase. To make things easier for you, check out our list of where to watch all of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies and TV shows.

5 movies you need to watch in August 2023
The Turtles eat pizza and look shocked in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Last year, the movie industry was on shaky ground. The COVID recovery was still in its earliest stages, and while there were hits like Top Gun: Maverick, there were fewer movies actually showing in theaters. Worst of all was the month of August, when only one big Hollywood movie, the mediocre action comedy Bullet Train, was released.

What a difference a year makes. In August 2023, Hollywood has packed the slate with a diverse selection of movies ranging from a comic book movie (the sure-to-fail DC Comics movie Blue Beetle), a video game adaptation (Gran Turismo), and the usual mixture of action movies, thrillers, and comedies. Here are the five best movies you should check out in August, and why they are worth going to the movies to see.

The TMNT are ready for battle in this image from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

In the last four decades, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had six movies. But the upcoming seventh film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, is the first movie to actually portray the TMNT as teenagers. Of course, this is a reboot, so forget everything you saw in the previous movies. In their latest incarnation, Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Donatello (Micah Abbey), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.), and Raphael (Brady Noon) may have been raised by Master Splinter (Jackie Chan), but they're clearly obsessed with social media. It's all they know about being kids, and it's no longer enough for them to hide in the sewers.
