Doctor Who featurette teases what’s to come for remaining season

Doctor Who returns with a new episode this weekend, and while many fans have likely been counting down the days — no, hours — until the midseason premiere, BBC America clearly wants to make sure it’s on everyone’s radar.

In its continuing efforts to promote the long-running science-fiction series’ return, the network has posted a new Doctor Who featurette hinting at what’s in store for The Doctor and his companions in the second half of the season. The video includes some discussion of the upcoming adventures by stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillen, as well as executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis, and showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat.

While the featurette heaps lots of pre-premiere praise on the upcoming “Let’s Kill Hitler” episode, there’s also some information about which popular creatures fans can expect to see returning in the remaining episodes. Among the notable villains that will face off against The Doctor later this year are The Silence, which made their debut in the season’s multi-episode premiere, as well as classic villains Cybermen and, according to the footage, the Weeping Angels.

Oh, and there appears to be a heaping helping of creepy dolls, too — which is always nice.

The midseason premiere of Doctor Who kicks off Saturday, August 27, on BBC America.

Growing up in the '90s, Doctor Who wasn't really a thing. Following the sci-fi show's cancellation in 1989, there was a 16-year period – aside from a one-off television movie in 1996 that failed to resurge the series as a whole – where traveling through time and space in a little blue box was non-existent. And yet during this time, at the young age of six, I was first introduced to a mysterious man with a bouffant hairstyle, velvet jacket, and a thrill for adventure.

This was Jon Pertwee. The once-circus performer and Royal Navy member (who reported directly to Winston Churchill during the Second World War), before later turning to the world of acting, made his debut as the Time Lord in January 1970's Spearhead from Space. Taking on the Autons, life-sized plastic dummies animated by an alien Nestene Consciousness, it didn't take long for the 50-year-old to make his mark.
Pertwee's Doctor Who was the perfect hero to root for
Death to the Daleks, a four-part adventure with Sarah Jane (played by the wonderful Elisabeth Sladen), is one of the earliest memories from my childhood. In many ways, it's a story indicative of the show's lasting charm. We have the Doctor's greatest foe in the Daleks, one of the most loved companions in Sarah Jane, and the terrifying Exxilons that contributed to the "hiding behind the sofa" phenomenon that scared children for decades. We even have the Root, a snake-like creature whose schlocky effects answer the question of what would happen if your Dyson hoover went rogue.

Young Justice is one of the best superhero TV shows of all time, plain and simple. Its fourth season, Phantoms, ended with the long-awaited wedding between Conner and M'Gann. Reuniting its large cast of characters together for the happy occasion, the show reminded audiences why it's so beloved, bringing a satisfying conclusion to a season fans had to wait three years for. The future is uncertain for Young Justice, as the notoriously secretive HBO Max remains tight-lipped on whether the show will return for a fifth round. We may not have absolute clarity about what's next for the show, but the pieces are there for a gripping and thrilling fifth season, and we can make several informed guesses about the show's direction.

Beyond those plots spelled out for us, Young Justice also set up several storylines in past seasons, and it's about time we get those payoffs. From characters with unfinished business with the team to arrivals long overdue, Young Justice has more than enough material to provide another gripping and ambitious season. And along with that would certainly come more of the thought-provoking and uncompromising writing we have come to expect from it.
