Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series A.K.A. Jessica Jones has added former Doctor Who star David Tennant to its cast, bringing quite a bit of sci-fi star power to the project and prompting much rejoicing from the geek community.

The official announcement regarding the casting identifies Tennant’s character in the series as a villain named Kilgrave, “an enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past.” According to Marvel, his reappearance in the title character’s life will “send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world.”

The character’s name is likely familiar to comic readers. In the Marvel Comics universe, Zebediah Killgrave is a villain known as “The Purple Man” who gained the ability to control other people’s will in the same accident that tinted his skin a dark, purple color. He first appeared in an early, 1964 issue of Daredevil.

Tennant joins previously announced series stars Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter, who will portray retired superhero Jessica Jones and invulnerable ex-convict Luke Cage, respectively.

“I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character,” said series showrunner Melissa Rosenberg in a statement accompanying the announcement. “He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

Tennant became a household name for sci-fi fans with an acclaimed performance as The Tenth Doctor in the long-running BBC series Doctor Who. His performance in that series is widely regarded as one of the key factors in the series’ recent mainstream success.

“Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave,” added Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb. “While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.”

A.K.A. Jessica Jones is expected to premiere on Netflix later this year after Daredevil. Both of these 13-episode series will then be followed by a Luke Cage series and an Iron Fist series, which will then lead into the team-up miniseries The Defenders.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
