Everything coming to Max (formerly HBO Max) in July 2024

Two women look at each other in Love LIes Bleeding.
A24

In June, fire lit up the skies as season 2 of House of the Dragon brought more bloodshed and flying dragons to HBO and Max subscribers’ TV sets around the globe. It’s tough to top that, but the network/streamer is set to do just that in July with a stacked slate of originals and library titles.

From the series debuts of Kite Man: Hell Yeah! and Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants to the streaming debut of one of 2024’s best movies so far, Love Lies Bleeding, HBO and Max will have plenty to offer for anyone in your household.

Editor’s note: This list may not be comprehensive and is subject to change by the network.

John Waters thinks this thriller is 2024’s best movie so far. Is he right?
A bloody woman leans next to a door in Love Lies Bleeding.

What's the first image that comes to mind when you hear the name John Waters? Well, besides that. (If you've never seen or heard of the 1972 movie Pink Flamingos, well, you're missing out.) You'd probably think about the pink satin cockroach dress Ricki Lake wore in the 1988 film Hairspray, or then-heartthrob Johnny Depp crying one single, perfect tear in 1990's Cry-Baby. But a lesser-known but still impressive accomplishment the underground filmmaker has earned over the years is that he's of one of our country's best critics.

That's right, the self-proclaimed "Prince of Puke" actually has great taste in movies, and frequently shares his list of his top 10 favorite films in a particular year. Last year, Waters proclaimed the divisive surrealist comedy Beau Is Afraid as the year's best, with Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and the Pedro Almodóvar Western Strange Way of Life earning spots on his coveted list.

The 10 most popular shows on Max right now
Deborah and Ava in Hacks standing on a balcony talking in a scene from season 3 of Hacks.

It may be the beginning of June, but we can tell you what the most popular show on HBO and Max will be a month from now. House of the Dragon won't premiere its second season until June 16, and it's almost certain to be No. 1 as long as it has new episodes to play. In the meantime, Hacks is the new No. 1 on our list of the most popular shows on Max right now. The third season of the show just ended, so it may not be in the top 10 at this time next month.

Perennial HBO favorites Real Time with Bill Maher and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver both remain on the list this month, as does The Jinx Part II. The new additions include Fallen Idols, Pretty Little Liars, Smiling Friends, and more.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.
