First footage from Marvel’s Daredevil series debuts in new trailer

We finally have our first look at Marvel’s upcoming Daredevil series on Netflix, and the preview makes it abundantly clear that blind lawyer Matt Murdock is going to travel a rough road on his way to becoming the famous, fearless vigilante of Hell’s Kitchen.

“I’m just trying to make my city a better place,” says series star Charlie Cox in the first preview for the series, which premieres April 10 on the streaming video service.

Along with confirming the series’ focus on gritty, street-level crime stories featuring the popular superhero, the trailer suggests that some of the religious elements of the character’s history that were popularized during Frank Miller’s celebrated run on the Daredevil comics have also been carried over to the live-action series. A man of many contradictions, Murdock historically struggles with the morality of spending his nights doling out violent punishment to criminals in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City where he lives and works.

“I’m not seeking forgiveness for what I’ve done, Father,” explains Murdock while confessing his sins to a priest in the trailer. “I’m asking forgiveness for what I’m about to do.”

Produced by series showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods), and Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, Daredevil will debut with all 13 episodes on Netflix at 12:01am PT on April 10. The series will be available to stream in 4K.

Along with Cox in the title role, the series also stars Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Vondie Curtis Hall as Ben Ulrich, Scott Glenn as Stick, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Marianna, Bob Gunton as Leland Owlsey, and Toby Leonard Moore as Wesley.

Daredevil will be the first of four Marvel series to debut on Netflix, with the title characters of all four projects (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) eventually teaming up for The Defenders miniseries.

Marvel and Disney are always scouring the press to get a good pull quote for their films. So for The Marvels, this is what they can use from us here at Digital Trends: "If you want people to stop making comic book movies, then you should make more movies like The Marvels." If superhero fatigue wasn't a thing before this film, it soon will be. The current box office projections for The Marvels show that it may come in at $47 million for its opening weekend, if not lower. That would place it well below many of 2023's other lackluster superhero flicks like The Flash.

In case you hadn't heard, there's a new Marvel movie out this week. But if you haven't gotten around to getting tickets for The Marvels yet, don't worry, there should be plenty of available seats. Perhaps the lack of anticipation is a branding problem, since calling it The Marvels distracts from the fact that it's a sequel to Captain Marvel. And if you haven't been paying attention to the Marvel Studios original shows on Disney+, then you may be a bit lost about the two new heroines, Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who are teaming up with Brie Larson's Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers.

The good news is that Disney+ is the streaming home for all of the MCU movies and shows that you need to watch before The Marvels. And in the interest of making things as easy to follow as possible, the shows and films are presented below in chronological order rather than by their release dates.
