Galadriel gathers her allies in The Rings of Power’s final trailer

In the weeks ahead, the real battle won’t be on Middle-earth. Instead, it will unfold between rival fantasy franchises: The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. Prime Video marked out the premiere date for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power a year ago, and HBO Max challenged them by dropping House of the Dragon right in front of it. Which franchise will reign supreme in the hearts and minds of fans? That remains to be seen, but Prime Video’s final trailer for The Rings of Power is making one more push for dominance.

Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel is the key figure in the new trailer, and it gives her a personal motivation in the war against the darkness. Galadriel’s brother laid down his life in defense of Middle-earth, and she has taken up his cause as her own. This is why she refuses to put down her sword and accept a life of peace. Galadriel senses the return of evil, even if she doesn’t yet know that Sauron is preparing his boldest move yet to remake the world in his image.

But not even a mighty warrior like Galadriel can do it alone. That’s why the trailer gives us a glimpse of many of the characters that will be her allies. You could even call them Galadriel’s Fellowship. Their number includes Maxim Baldry’s Isildur, the son of the king who has his own dark destiny in the months and years ahead.

This series features an incredibly massive cast, including Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Owain Arthur as Durin IV, Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn, Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor, Markella Kavenagh as Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Míriel, and Lloyd Owen as Elendil.

The first episode of The Rings of Power will premiere on September 1, with the second episode following on September 2. The remaining episodes will premiere weekly on Prime Video.

The mystery at the heart of the first season of The Rings of Power was whether Sauron was somewhere amongst the show's sprawling ensemble. In the season finale, titled "Alloys," we get our answer: Halbrand, Galadriel's human companion and close confidant throughout much of the season, is in fact Sauron. Galadriel discovers that he is not the lost king of the Southlands, and Halbrand a.k.a. Sauron attempts to convince her to join forces with him by showing Galadriel a vision of her long-lost brother. His temptation ultimately fails, and Halbrand leaves Eregion.

It's arguably never been a better time to be a fantasy fan, with big-name series like Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, and more all in the limelight in some form or another. This year has been a massive one in particular with House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power airing at the same time, but thanks to the video game medium, there are plenty of other ways for genre enthusiasts to indulge themselves.

Several talented developer studios have crafted painstakingly detailed fantasy worlds worth getting invested in ranging a diverse catalog of franchises, with, unsurprisingly, the RPG genre lending itself best to this type of setting. And from the Middle-earth games to FromSoftware's recent collaboration with George R. R. Martin, there's an embarrassment of riches for fans of both The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon.

Few streaming series have carried as much weight into their premiere as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Amazon Studios' ambitious, ludicrously expensive series set in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth saga. Not only is the Prime Video series telling a new story set in one of the fantasy genre's most seminal -- and as such, highly scrutinized -- worlds, but its success (or failure) could very well determine the fate of an entire streaming service.

That's a lot to put on any show, so it's probably a good thing that the first two episodes of The Rings of Power deliver on all of the project's potential (and then some).
