The ‘Game of Thrones’ exhibition tour might be coming to a city near you

HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones is nearing the end of its record-breaking run, but the high-fantasy drama still has more to offer its fans — namely, the Game of Thrones: Exhibition Tour that will bring the fictional land of Westeros to cities all around the world.

HBO and global events provider GES announced plans for the touring exhibition this week, with a kick-off date in fall 2017 somewhere in Europe. Additional cities and tour dates outside Europe will be announced at a later point.

Promising to “drop fans in the center of the Seven Kingdoms for an up-close and personal look at authentic props, costumes, and set decorations from the show,” the tour will feature a “10,000-square-foot interactive experience” with multimedia content exploring the mythical worlds of Westeros and Essos. Costumes, props, weapons, and armor from the series will be on display, as well as several themed portions of the exhibit based on iconic locations and moments from the show.

The press release announcing the exhibition offered up a photo depicting one element of the tour and identified several of the themed areas of the exhibit:

  • The wintry landscapes of the North, the tree-lined pathway of the King’s Road, and the regal settings of King’s Landing.
  • The conquered city of Meereen with its garrisons of Unsullied warriors and the loyalists of House Targaryen.
  • Iconic settings like the mysterious House of Black and White, the home of the Night’s Watch: Castle Black; and the frozen lands Beyond the Wall.
  • The show stopping centerpiece of the iconic Iron Throne Room, where visitors can gaze upon the Westerosi seat of power in all its foreboding glory.

“Based on the stellar work GES has done with previous entertainment partners, we think this exhibition is going to be something fans will love, regardless of which part of the world they call home, and we’re excited to give them the opportunity to visit and celebrate the incredible craftsmanship of the talented Game of Thrones production team,” Jeff Peters, HBO’s director of global licensing, said in a statement.

Season 7 of Game of Thrones is scheduled to premiere July 16 on HBO.

The specific dates and locations for Game of Thrones: Exhibition Tour will likely be announced in the near future.

May 19, 2019, is a date branded on the pop culture lexicon. However, the episode's terrible reception put the network's plan in doubt, with many wondering if the Game of Thrones brand was in a healthy enough place to support a franchise. Things got worse when the first spinoff, starring Naomi Watts, got unceremoniously axed -- even after shooting a $30 million pilot -- spelling doom for the would-be franchise. Alas, not all was lost; GoT still had an ace up its sleeve, and it was called House Targaryen.

After the generational success that Game of Thrones brought the overall HBO brand, the face of original premium TV has begun a broader expansion of the dark fantasy world of author George R. R. Martin with House of the Dragon. The prequel has reinvigorated the strengths of the flagship show, with more projects underway -- including the Jon Snow-led sequel series. But aside from more TV prequels and a sequel, as ambitious as that all sounds, the video game medium should be something else that's at least on HBO and Martin's radar.

Given the tumultuous merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, it's hard to say what the likes of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will look like in the near or distant future, but the world of A Song of Ice and Fire is teeming with a mythology that would lend itself well to gaming. Whether it's through the roleplaying or real-time strategy genres, there are plenty of avenues developers can take this IP.

House of the Dragon ended its hugely successful first season with an episode that included everything, from plots to steal the Iron Throne to dragon battles and a violent death. In short, it was just another day in Westeros. Yes, House of the Dragon was a resounding success, but it owes much of it to Game of Thrones. The show that single-handedly revived the fantasy genre and redefined what the word "spectacle" meant in television, GoT was a game-changer.

The show conquered fans' and critics' hearts with a successful mix of political intrigue and good, old-fashioned drama; there was nothing like it on television or film. Game of Thrones featured a seemingly endless parade of morally-dubious characters vying to seat on a pointy chair, and we couldn't get enough of them. Indeed, the pursuit of power was at the heart of GoT, with every major player wanting to get their share of the glory. But what is power in Westeros? Varys said it best: it's an illusion, a shadow on the wall. And these characters certainly cast a very large shadow. Whether because of their resources, armies, gold, or charm, these figures were the most powerful in Westeros and the beating heart of the game of thrones.
