Ghostface heads to New York City in Scream VI teaser trailer

If there’s one thing the Scream franchise has taught, it’s that Ghostface will live on. Even if one person dies in the costume, someone else will inevitably take up the mantle and become a killer. In the teaser trailer for Scream VI, Ghostface has found a new place to terrorize: New York City.

As the poster reads, “New York. New Rules.” After the events of Scream, also known as Scream V, sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Wednesday‘s Jenna Ortega) leave Woodsboro in favor of the Big Apple to start a new life. The girls are joined by twins Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) Meek-Martin, who all survived the recent Woodsboro murders at the hands of Ghostface. The quartet will soon learn that there’s no hiding from Ghostface as the masked murderer confronts the group on the New York City subway in the teaser trailer.

Scream VI marks the return of Courteney Cox as television reporter Gale Weathers and Hayden Panettiere as Kirby, a survivor of the Ghostface killings in Scream IV. New cast members joining the franchise include Samara Weaving, Henry Czerny, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, and Dermot Mulroney. Neve Campbell, who starred as the iconic final girl, Sidney Prescott, will not return for the sixth film due to contract complications.

Scream VI is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a script written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. These four men worked in the same capacity on the previous film, 2022’s Scream, which grossed $140 million and received positive reviews, with many calling it the best sequel in the franchise.

What's your favorite scary movie? 27 years ago, that question was posed to Casey Becker (Fever Pitch's Drew Barrymore) by a masked killer named Ghostface in the opening scene of Scream. It - spoiler alert - did not end well for Casey. However, the course of slashers changed with the release of Scream. The film brilliantly satirized horror clichés and featured characters who openly spoke about real horror movies. But at the end of the day, Scream was still a slasher that did not shy away from blood, gore, or violence.

The Scream franchise is now amid a resurgence thanks to Scream, the fifth film in the series. The 2022 film helped relaunch the franchise and introduced Ghostface to a new generation of horror fans. Scream grossed over $140 million worldwide, spawning a direct sequel, Scream VI, which hits theaters on March 10.

Early reviews for Scream VI are lauding it as a new peak for the veteran franchise and the best entry since the game-changing 1996 original. Coming from the one-of-a-kind mind of the late great Wes Craven, Scream is the rare franchise that never runs out of steam. Thanks to a premise designed to reinvent itself with each new entry, Scream is the gift that keeps on giving, to the point where it wouldn't be an overstatement to say every chapter in the series is among the all-time best horror movies.

While every entry in the series ranges from "good" to "great," we can still rank them from worst to best. No fan's ranking will look the same; some might be OG Scream purists, while others will insist 2022's Scream is the new blueprint. However, we can all admit there are no weak entries in this franchise, with each film adding something to Ghostface's lore while cementing Scream as a cinematic horror institution.
