HBO is pleased with its attempt to create an Entourage-esque show. Ballers, starring Dwayne Johnson, has just been renewed for a second season, thanks to the impressive performance of its first three episodes. The show follows retired NFL player Spencer Strasmore (Johnson) as he adjusts to life after football.
The series follows Strasmore as he decides to become a financial adviser to guys who are still in the league. He’s surrounded by a cast of characters that includes fellow athletes (both retired and active), sports agents, and at least one ex-football wife. Like Entourage, the characters on Ballers get up to a variety of shenanigans as they work and play hard. Actors John David Washington, Omar Miller, Donovan W. Carter, Troy Garity, London Brown, Jazmyn Simon, and Rob Corddry co-star.
“The charismatic and hugely talented Dwayne Johnson, along with the rest of the Ballers cast, has truly struck a chord with the HBO audience,” the network’s original programming chief, Michael Lombardo, said in a statement. “We are thrilled with the overwhelming response the series has received and look forward to another exciting season.”
The June 21 debut of Ballers was the most-watched episode of a comedy series since 2009, with 8.9 million viewers watching it on HBO platforms. On top of that, 5.6 million people watched the premiere on Johnson’s Facebook page. The early hit reunites a bevy of Entourage vets, including executive producers Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Rob Weiss, and Denis Biggs. Levinson doubles as series creator, and Johnson, Dany Garcia, Peter Berg, Evan Reilly, and Julian Farino also executive produce.
Johnson tweeted out a thank you to fans after the show’s renewal, crediting them with making the show a huge hit.
