HBO reveals Season Five directors for Game Of Thrones

Fans of HBO’s Game Of Thrones have awhile to wait for the fifth season of the hit series based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels, but the network revealed who will be behind the camera when the program picks up again next year.

All but one of the directors for the fifth season of Game Of Thrones will be new to the world of Westeros, according to EW, with each of the five directors taking on two episodes of the series.

The lineup for Season Five includes director Michael Slovis (AMC’s Breaking Bad, NBC’s Law & Order: SVU) on the first two episodes of the season, then Mark Mylod (Showtime’s Shameless, HBO’s Entourage) on the next two episodes. They’ll be followed by Jeremy Podeswa (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Showtime’s The Tudors) on the fifth and six episodes of the season, and Miguel Sapochnik (FOX’s House, Fringe) on the seventh and eighth episodes.

The only returning director will be David Nutter, who will direct the final two episodes of the season. Nutter earned quite a bit of acclaim for directing the Season Three episode “The Rains of Castamere,” better known as the “Red Wedding” episode.

It’s worth noting that Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will be taking a break from directing any episodes next season.

Season Five of Game Of Thrones is expected to premiere in April 2015, though no official premiere date has been set at this point.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is missing the one thing that made Game of Thrones great

Netflix's 3 Body Problem isn't just the streaming service's long-awaited adaptation of the acclaimed Chinese science fiction novel of the same name by Liu Cixin. It's also Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' follow-up to their HBO smash hit. In many ways, the Netflix series, which Benioff and Weiss co-created with Alexander Woo, is a worthy successor to a show like Thrones. Like that game-changing HBO drama, it's an adaptation of the kind of famously complex source material that many understandably believed to be unadaptable.

To Benioff, Weiss, and Woo's credit, they prove that's not true across 3 Body Problem's debut eight-episode season. Together, the trio and their collaborators successfully streamline the science-driven narrative of Cixin's original novel, turning it into an episodic story that is both easily digestible and propulsive. While 3 Body Problem gets a lot right, though, it's missing the one thing that made Game of Thrones such a beloved show in the first place. To put it frankly, its characters just aren't all that memorable.

HBO has multiple incredible shows. After all, as the cable network's slogan goes, it's not television, it's HBO. However, few of the network's originals can compare to the juggernaut that was Game of Thrones. Developed by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and based on George R. R. Martin's literary saga A Song of Ice and Fire, the show followed multiple feuding noble families struggling to sit on the Iron Throne and rule over the war-torn continent of Westeros.

At its peak, Game of Thrones was the biggest show on Earth, dominating award shows and scoring HBO the biggest ratings in its history. Across eight seasons and 73 episodes, the show shocked, scandalized, and thrilled audiences worldwide, cementing its place among television's greatest achievements. However, even its most devoted fans can't say it remained consistent throughout. Indeed, while some seasons were positively masterful, others were outright embarrassing, proving that when you play the game of thrones, there truly is no middle ground.

Why weren't there any dragons at the beginning of Game of Thrones? It's largely because of the events depicted in the prequel series, House of the Dragon. Despite having control over the seven kingdoms of Westeros, the Targaryen family just couldn't stop themselves from destroying each other. The march to war unfolded over many years in season 1, but now there's only room for one person on the Iron Throne. The just-released first two trailers for House of the Dragon season 2 invite viewers to pick a side between the Black and the Green.
