Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds will reunite for Deadpool 3

In 2017, Hugh Jackman hung up his adamantium claws and retired from the role of Wolverine after a moving performance in Logan. But old X-Men never stay dead forever. Earlier today, Ryan Reynolds posted a video in which he apologized to fans for the lack of Deadpool 3 news at D23 Expo. But he made up for it by facetiously confessing to having no idea what to do for the third movie … except to bring Jackman back as Wolverine.

Jackman briefly appears in the video as he casually agrees to reprise his signature role for the 10th time. X-Men was Jackman’s big break in 2000, and it helped usher in the current age of comic book movies. Jackman also held the record for portraying the same superhero on the big screen for 17 years. Now, that record is going to be extended to 24 years.

There are, of course, some questions about how Wolverine will be integrated into the film, especially since Marvel is likely to cast a much younger actor in the role for the inevitable X-Men reboot movie. But the Deadpool movies are all about irreverent humor, so the plot details don’t even matter as long as he’s there.

In the video, Reynolds also debuted the logo for Deadpool 3, which cleverly uses the slashes from Wolverine’s claws to give it the number 3. Hopefully that’s an indication that Jackman will have much more than a cameo appearance. He is also the third actor from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies to reprise his role in the MCU. Evan Peters appeared as a fake Quicksilver in WandaVision, while Patrick Stewart had a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy has previously worked with Jackman on Real Steel and Reynolds on The Adam Project. That may have also played a role in getting Jackman and Reynolds back together for the first time since the latter made his debut as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are also coming back for the sequel.

Marvel Studios will release Deadpool 3 on September 6, 2024.

Is Jennifer Garner’s 2005 Elektra movie really that bad?

Twenty years after she originated the role of Elektra in the Ben Affleck movie Daredevil, Deadline is reporting that Jennifer Garner will return to her Marvel character in Deadpool 3. The Ryan Reynolds-led film also stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and it is heavily rumored that it will feature other characters and actors from 20th Century Fox's Marvel movies. Garner's inclusion certainly makes those rumors appear to be true. And Garner has the unique, and dubious distinction, of headlining the very first solo Marvel heroine movie: Elektra.

Following Daredevil's release in 2003, Fox didn't immediately order a sequel. Instead, Fox went forward with a spinoff movie starring Garner's character, Elektra Natchios. Elektra arrived in theaters on January 14, 2005, and it promptly bombed at the box office. The poorly reviewed movie arguably prevented other Marvel heroines from getting their chance to headline a film until Captain Marvel in 2019. It's also worth noting that neither Elektra nor Daredevil are currently available to stream on any service, although they can be purchased or rented from digital outlets. If Marvel and Disney want to bury these films, that's the easy way to do it.

Iron Man 3 is the most underrated MCU movie ever. Here’s why it’s worth watching

Casual comic book movie fans may be surprised to hear it, but upon the release of Iron Man 3, the most common response among comic book readers was anger. Since the first film, there had been hints that Tony Stark's comic book nemesis, the Mandarin, would eventually make his live-action debut in a future Iron Man sequel. And when it finally happened in Iron Man 3, fans felt that Marvel had chickened out because Ben Kingsley's Mandarin wasn't really the Mandarin at all. He was just an actor who was pretending to be the Mandarin.

Some fans have held on to that anger for so long that they will tell you to your face that Iron Man 3 is one of the worst movies in the MCU. That's a view that needs additional perspective. In 2008, Iron Man was an instant classic that kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revitalized the career of Robert Downey Jr., and established Jon Favreau as one of the top directors in Hollywood. It also became the template for almost every Marvel movie that came after it, for better or worse. It's pretty hard for any movie to live up to that legacy, much less the third in a series.

Before the MCU was a gleam in Kevin Feige's eye, the only true cinematic universe comic book fans had was the X-Men universe. In the 2000s, 20th Century Fox mined the Marvel Comics property for all of its worth, creating a trilogy of movies, plus one really bad Wolverine film, that existed in the same world and referenced one another.

The best of the bunch was X2: X-Men United. Released in the first week of May 2003, it did what sequels are supposed to do: be bigger and better than their predecessor, while still setting up future installments so fans will keep coming back for more. X2 excelled at just about everything: characterization, action, humor, worldbuilding, you name it. X2 did it -- and did it well. In honor of its 20th anniversary, here are 20 reasons why X2: X-Men United still holds up all these years later as one of the best comic book movies ever made.
