Former House star Hugh Laurie has been rehired as a doctor. He’ll star in the upcoming psychological thriller Chance, which has been picked up for two 10-episode seasons on Hulu according to Deadline. The streaming TV series based on Kem Nunn’s novel of the same name delves into the life of a forensic neuropsychiatrist (Laurie) who gets wrapped up in a world of “mistaken identity, police corruption, and mental illness.” Lenny Abrahamson of the Golden Globe-nominated film Room will direct.

Set in California’s Bay Area, Laurie’s Dr. Eldon Chance becomes intimately acquainted with Jaclyn Blackstone, who is suffering from a dissociative identity disorder. Between his relationship with Blackstone, whose ex-husband is a “violent and jealous” Oakland homicide detective, and his new friend D, described as a “streetwise philosopher,” Dr. Chance’s life becomes much more confusing, dangerous, and thought-provoking than he could’ve anticipated.

The show marks Laurie’s first starring TV role since his eight-season run on Fox’s House, which earned him two Golden Globes, ended in 2012. The actor had been “heavily pursued” to join a new series, but previously turned down every offer he received according to Deadline. And even for his starring role on Chance, he was pursued for 18 months before signing on to the show. But now it sounds like Laurie’s invested in his new character. “Hugh has very strong feelings, and he will be involved in every aspect of production,” said Fox 21 TV studios, which produced the show, exec Bert Salke.

Nunn and Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives, Aquarius) wrote the TV adaptation of the novel and will executive produce with Abrahamson, Michael London (Milk), and Brian Grazer (Empire). The show’s production is likely to begin in the spring.

Also upcoming on Hulu is the J.J. Abrams’ miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s 11.22.63, which is set to premiere on February 15.

3 great sci-fi movies on Hulu you need to watch in May 2024
Hugh Jackman in Reminiscence.

The great thing about sci-fi movies on Hulu is that there's always an abundance of films in this genre from the 20th Century Fox library alone. But genre fans can't live on just Alien, Predator, or Alien vs. Predator. We need a little variety with these fantastic adventures, because there's only so many times we can watch all of the Planet of the Apes movies.

This month's picks for the three great sci-fi movies on Hulu that you need to watch in May are all from outside studios. They include Vin Diesel's favorite sci-fi franchise, a 2021 science fiction thriller starring Hugh Jackman, and an unusual sci-fi buddy comedy that goes in some very unexpected directions.

A man aims two guns in Shogun.

While it doesn't get as much love as Netflix, Hulu's library of content is every bit as rich as its competitor's. The best shows on Hulu are among the best shows you can watch anywhere, but if you're trying to narrow in on one to watch, that choice can be difficult.

If you're looking for something to binge in the month of May, Shōgun may be perfect. Adapted from a decades-old James Clavell novel of the same name and loosely based on actual Japanese history, the limited series is one of the best to come along in several years. The show, which tells the story of a British sea captain who becomes an ally to a powerful Japanese lord, is riveting from its first moment. Here are three reasons you should check it out.

Anne Hathaway as Rebecca looking intently off-camera in Eileen.

If you're looking for something to watch this weekend, then Hulu has you covered. Disney's other streaming service doesn't get all of the press that Disney+ does, but Hulu has a much better library of movies, especially for cinema lovers who want to watch more than just Star Wars or Marvel flicks.

This week's selections of the three Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend include an underrated Wes Anderson film, a non-Marvel superhero flick, and a 2023 psychological thriller that didn't get the attention it deserved during its initial release.
