Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will produce Ironheart

In 2018, director Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther became one of Marvel’s most successful films and earned the studio its first-ever Best Picture nomination. Coogler is currently finishing the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, ahead of its release later this year. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler is expanding his relationship with Marvel Studios by executive producing the upcoming Disney+ original series Ironheart.

Created by Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato in 2016, Ironheart is the alter ego of Riri Williams, a 15-year-old tech genius enrolled at MIT. Riri managed to reverse engineer Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor and create her own suit. Stark was so impressed by Riri that he endorsed her desire to become a superhero. In the series, Dominique Thorne will play Riri, a role that she will originate in Wakanda Forever.

Additionally, THR revealed that two directors have signed on to helm Ironheart. Dear White People veteran Sam Bailey will direct the first three episodes of Ironheart. Angela Barnes, the creator of Brown Girls and You’re So Talented, will direct the remaining three episodes of the first season.

Ironheart will also feature Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, and Harper Anthony in supporting roles. However, their character details have not yet been announced by Marvel.

THR notes that Coogler’s participation in Ironheart falls under the overall deal that he signed with Disney in 2021. That contract also calls for Coogler to produce a Wakanda-themed Marvel original series in addition to Ironheart. Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian, will executive produce Ironheart through Coogler’s company, Proximity Media.

Ironheart will likely begin filming later this year. A premiere date has not been announced yet.

Marvel casts Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Wonder Man for Disney+

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will reprise his role as DC Comics' villainous Black Manta in next year's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, Abdul-Mateen is going to get a chance to portray a superhero of his own in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. Deadline is reporting that Abdul-Mateen has been cast as Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man, for his own upcoming Disney+ series.

Don't let the name fool you. Marvel's Wonder Man has nothing to do with DC's Wonder Woman. Instead, Stan Lee and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby created Simon Williams as a one-off Avengers villain in 1964. Within his debut story, Simon was a disgraced executive who was given superpowers by the Masters of Evil in return for infiltrating the Avengers and betraying them. Regardless, Simon ultimately sided with the Avengers and turned against the Masters even though it cost him his life.

Wakanda comes under attack in new Black Panther 2 clip

In just under two weeks, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will take the MCU into new territory while also paying tribute to both Chadwick Boseman and his character, T'Challa. Although the heroes of Wakanda are mourning their king, they won't have time to wallow in their grief. That's because their nation is getting dragged into war with Talokan, an underwater kingdom led by Namor, the Sub-Mariner (Tenoch Huerta). And as you can see in the following preview scene, when Talokan attacks, they do so with overwhelming force.

Last night in Los Angeles, Marvel Studios gave Black Panther: Wakanda Forever a world premiere on Hollywood Boulevard. The early word from critics is that it serves as a fitting tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman and his character, T'Challa. It also sets the stage for the future by putting the spotlight on the female characters from the first film. During a taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live, two preview scenes from the movie were released. In the first clip, Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) explains to Okoye (Danai Gurira) why she couldn't bear to stay in Wakanda after T'Challa's death.
