A shocking true crime story is revealed in A Friend of the Family: True Evil

Peacock’s A Friend of the Family miniseries is currently dramatizing the story of Jan Broberg, a woman who was abducted twice: Once when she was 12, and again when she was 14 years old. The man who took Jan was not a stranger to her or her parents. His name was Robert Berchtold, and he was the titular “friend of the family.” While the miniseries still has a few episodes left before the finale on November 10, the real Jan Broberg is confronting that dark period in her life in Peacock’s upcoming companion documentary, A Friend of the Family: True Evil.

In the trailer above, Broberg touches upon one of the most shocking aspects of her story: Berchtold was sexually intimate with both of Broberg’s parents. But this sexual predator also set his sights on Broberg when she was just a child, and he attempted to brainwash her while abusing her and taking her away from her family twice. It’s a horrific experience to relive even decades later; yet, perhaps the cruelest twist is that Broberg wasn’t Berchold’s only victim.

The name of Berchtold’s other victim isn’t mentioned in the trailer, but she is seen speaking with Broberg as they attempt to come to terms with what happened to them when they were children. It’s not a happy story by any stretch of the imagination, yet through this tragedy, Broberg and her family have endured and found a purpose by exposing the evil things that were done to her.

A Friend of the Family: True Evil will premiere on Peacock on November 15.

Ryan Murphy discusses family and true crime with the women of The Watcher
Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale walk in unison in a scene from Netflix's The Watcher.

After reading The Cut's 2018 article, The Haunting of a Dream House, Ryan Murphy thought about the well-being of his family. The idea of safety and what people were willing to do to protect their loved ones motivated Murphy to adapt the article for Netflix, which became the true crime series, The Watcher.

"That's the thing that drew me into this story because I was thinking when I read that story that was in The Cut, I instantly thought of my own family," said Murphy in an interview with Netflix. "And I think that idea of how we're living in the world now, everybody all over the world, I guess seems under attack in some way and that idea of, 'How do I keep my family safe?' was something that I was instantly motivated by."

A Friend of the Family cast and crew reflect on empathizing with the Brobergs
Jake Lacy smiles in A Friend of the Family.

Like it or not, America has a true crime obsession. While poring over the details a high-profile murder or kidnapping case may be entertaining, there's a major caveat that's often forgotten. These programs are based on true events, which means some victims live with the consequences of the case for the rest of their lives. Jan Broberg, the producer and subject of Peacock's A Friend of the Family, tells her story not to entertain, but to start a difficult conversation that could save lives.

Created by Nick Antosca, A Friend of the Family recounts the heartbreaking events surrounding the kidnapping of Broberg at the hands of Robert "B" Berchtold (Jake Lacy). Over the course of a few years, Berchtold manipulated and preyed upon the entire Broberg family before kidnapping Jan (Mckenna Grace as the older Jan and Hendrix Yancey as the younger Jan) multiple times. Colin Hanks and Anna Paquin star as Bob and Mary Ann Broberg, while Lio Tipton plays Robert's wife, Gail.

In the trailer for Peacock's A Friend of the Family, which is based on a true story, FBI Agent Peter Walsh (Austin Stowell) tells the Broberg family to question the intentions of their neighbor, Robert Berchtold (Jake Lacy). "No one thinks that their best friend is a monster," says Walsh. "But he has all the hallmarks of a psychopathic personality."

Colin Hanks and Anna Paquin star as Bob and Mary Ann Broberg, a kindhearted suburban family who became great friends with Robert and his wife, Gai (Lio Tipton). Over a few years, Robert manipulated the Brobergs to go against one another other, exploiting their vulnerabilities as a family while driving a wedge between the parents and one of their daughters, Jan (Mckenna Grace). During this time frame, Robert kidnapped Jan multiple times, and sexually assaulted her in the process.
