Yesterday’s news brought a photo of the cast of Suicide Squad gathered together for a reading of the film’s script, but the image was particularly notable for who it didn’t feature. Conspicuously absent from the group of actors in the photo was Jared Leto, who will play iconic Batman villain The Joker in the upcoming supervillain team-up movie.

And now, just a day later, we have our first photo of Leto as the menacing trickster himself.

Suicide Squad director David Ayer posted a blurry photo of Leto as DC Comics’ “Clown Prince of Crime” to Twitter yesterday, and along with offering the first glimpse of The Joker as he might appear in the film, it also pays homage to one of the most iconic images of the character from his comic-book history.

As you can see, the photo features Leto holding up a camera, his green hair on display, but much of his actual face and features blurred. Many had wondered whether the film, which is expected to offer a gritty spin on some of DC Comics’ most popular villains, would actually go so far as to give Joker his signature, emerald-hued hair — but this image should provide at least some comfort to comics purists.

Written by Alan Moore and featuring art by celebrated illustrator Brian Bolland, The Killing Joke is regarded by many readers as one of the greatest Joker stories ever published, and offers both a new origin story for the character and one of Batman’s darkest, most disturbing encounters with his notorious arch enemy. The cover of The Killing Joke (see below) famously features Joker pointing a camera at the reader, much like Leto is doing in Ayer’s photo.

Scheduled to hit theaters August 5, 2016, Suicide Squad follows a group of supervillains who are forced to undertake dangerous missions for a mysterious government agency. Along with Leto as The Joker, the film stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Plastique, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and actors Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack, Adam Beach, and Jay Hernandez in unspecified roles (rumored to be Hugo Strange, Deathstroke, Ravan, and El Diablo, respectively).

Jared Leto explains lore of Marvel’s Morbius in new video
Jared Leto in Morbius.

Be honest: Had you ever heard about Morbius before Sony announced its plans for a live-action adaptation? There's no shame in not knowing who he was in Marvel's comic book universe. Morbius has had a few comic book series of his own, but he's rarely been a headlining character. However, Morbius' connection to Spider-Man is the reason why Sony has the rights to produce this non-MCU Marvel movie. And ahead of the film's final trailer, Sony Pictures is explaining Morbius' history for the uninitiated.

Jared Leto hosts the new Lore of Morbius video, since he stars in the film as Dr. Michael Morbius, a man stricken with a rare blood disease. Morbius' diagnosis is terminal, but the cure he finds may be far worse than the disease. Because now Morbius has a vampire's thirst for blood, and many of the powers associated with the children of the night.

Jared Leto goes full vampire in vicious new Morbius preview
Morbius the Living Vampire on the ground in Morbius.

Early next year, Jared Leto is headlining Morbius, the next film in Sony Pictures' Spider-Man adjacent movie universe. And in a new Morbius preview scene, Leto's character, Dr. Michael Morbius, undergoes a startling transformation into a living vampire. As in the comics, Michael is desperately trying to cure his rare blood disease. Unfortunately, the cure may be far worse than the disease.

In the preview, Michael and his fiancée, Martine Bancroft, are prisoners on a ship and under heavy guard. Martine is also a doctor, but even she couldn't have foreseen that Michael's treatment would strip him of his humanity. Michael's transition from human to vampire looks extremely painful. But he has it easy compared to the guards after he unleashes his fangs and claws. Workman's comp probably can't cover those injuries.

The Suicide Squad’s John Cena returns in the first Peacemaker teaser
John Cena in Peacemaker.

If you have no idea who Peacemaker is supposed to be, don't worry. Even among dedicated DC Comics fans, Peacemaker wasn't exactly an A-list comic book character before writer and director James Gunn placed him in The Suicide Squad earlier this year. Gunn cast former WWE wrestler John Cena as Peacemaker, and he must have liked what he saw in Cena's performance because out of every surviving member of Task Force X, Peacemaker is the only one who is getting a spinoff series on HBO Max.

As part of this morning's HBO Max Europe preview, fans got their first look at the new Peacemaker series. It's worth mentioning that Peacemaker's real name is Christopher Smith, but there's never a moment when he isn't Peacemaker. The concept of a secret identity is foreign to Christopher, and he can't resist wearing his new Peacemaker costume out to a casual dinner with his co-workers. Fair warning: There's a lot of NSFW language in the following clip.
