ennifer Lawrence and the X-Men franchise will soon be no more, as the actress has confirmed that the next flick – X-Men: Apocalypse – will be her last, reports Variety.

Lawrence has played Mystique in two of the films in the franchise to date (X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past), and will reprise the sexy blue mutant character for the final time in this, the third film hosting the younger generation of the core X-Men characters.

The report claims that J-Law’s character will have a more significant role in this film than in the past. That’s not surprising since Lawrence has earned herself some real street cred among the Hollywood elite thanks to high profile roles in films like Winter’s Bone, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle, receiving Academy Award nominations for each, and winning one for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.

That win made her the second-youngest person to win a Best Actress Award. (Marlee Matlin still holds the record as the youngest at 21 – just a year younger than Lawrence at the time of her win – for her role in Children of a Lesser God back in 1986.) Lawrence has also resonated with the teen/tween crowd via her starring role in The Hunger Games series.

Reportedly, the relationship between Mystique and the character of Beast (played by Nicholas Hoult) will get more screen time in this film. And her relationhip with Erik and Charles will also be further explored.

Also returning for Apocalypse will be James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Rose Byrne. Not returning, however, will be Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. X-Men: Apocalypse is slated to hit theaters May 27, 2016.

The MCU needs the X-Men (but the X-Men don’t need the MCU)

Long before Marvel became a Disney-owned Hollywood juggernaut, the cash-strapped comics publisher stayed afloat by licensing the movie rights to its most popular characters to major studios. Sony and Columbia Pictures hit the jackpot with Spider-Man, with the film franchise having grossed over $9 billion since 2002, but it’s arguably 20th Century Fox who got the most bang for its buck by purchasing the rights to Marvel’s most sprawling roster of characters: the X-Men.

More than just a single super-team, the X-Men are a universe unto themselves, with a massive mythology spanning centuries, light-years, and branching alternate timelines. Fox’s X-Men franchise was an important superhero movie success story, but it barely scratched the surface of its source material and, with the exception of the smash-hit Deadpool films, it was running on fumes by the time the studio was purchased outright by Disney in 2019.
Since the Disney buyout, Marvel movie fans have anxiously awaited the introduction of X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where they were legally off limits for the entirety of the Infinity Saga. There’s enormous potential in adapting the mighty Mutants in Marvel’s prismatic, interconnected multimedia idiom, and given the uneven response to Marvel’s post-Endgame installments, the X-Men could provide the MCU a much-needed infusion of familiar characters and beloved stories. On the other hand, aside from a fresh start in a new continuity, what — if anything — does the MCU have to offer the X-Men?

20 reasons why X2: X-Men United still rules 20 years later

Before the MCU was a gleam in Kevin Feige's eye, the only true cinematic universe comic book fans had was the X-Men universe. In the 2000s, 20th Century Fox mined the Marvel Comics property for all of its worth, creating a trilogy of movies, plus one really bad Wolverine film, that existed in the same world and referenced one another.

The best of the bunch was X2: X-Men United. Released in the first week of May 2003, it did what sequels are supposed to do: be bigger and better than their predecessor, while still setting up future installments so fans will keep coming back for more. X2 excelled at just about everything: characterization, action, humor, worldbuilding, you name it. X2 did it -- and did it well. In honor of its 20th anniversary, here are 20 reasons why X2: X-Men United still holds up all these years later as one of the best comic book movies ever made.
1. It improved on the first movie in every way
