Jurassic World is set to come to TV … but you’ll have to wait for it

Jurassic World‘s huge debut, complete with multiple box office records, didn’t go unnoticed by TV networks — or anyone, really. FX announced today that they’ve nabbed worldwide TV rights to the latest installment in the Jurassic Park franchise. The blockbuster sci-fi adventure film will air exclusively on FX, as well as sister outlets FXX and FXM.

Starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, among others, Jurassic World picks up over two decades after where Jurassic Park left off. Isla Nublar has been converted into a dinosaur theme park, but chaos ensues when a genetically modified dinosaur, the Indominus rex, gets loose and goes crazy. With nods to its predecessor, Jurassic World is nostalgic, yet filled with epic action and impressive special effects. Theaters have been filled by fans of the original and new fans alike.

The addition of Jurassic World bolsters FX’s already impressive roster of box office hits it will bring to TV. So far, the Fox Entertainment Group-owned networks have already acquired rights for fellow Universal blockbusters Furious 7 and Pitch Perfect 2, as well as 20th Century Fox’s Taken 3 and Kingsman: The Secret Service. FX is increasingly getting in the game when it comes to licensing TV rights for box office juggernauts. In fact, the TV rights for 64 percent of 2014 films grossing over $100 million were acquired by FX.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to catch Jurassic World and its latest group of dinosaurs on TV anytime soon. As of now, no dates have been announced, but EW reports that it will be at least two years before it hits the airwaves. If you aren’t one for waiting, it’s safe to say that you’ll want to join the throngs of people seeing it in theaters. You can always re-watch it on TV later.

The Jurassic World trilogy came to its epic conclusion with the third and final film, Jurassic World Dominion. Set four years after the events of Fallen Kingdom, dinosaurs now roam the Earth and struggle to coexist with humans. Owen Grady (Guardians of the Galaxy's Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Rocketman's Bryce Dallas Howard) are secretly living with and raising Maisie Lockwood (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's Isabella Sermon). What it’s like to be Jurassic World’s live-action dinosaur wrangler

Director Colin Trevorrow wrapped up the modern Jurassic World trilogy in dramatic (and familiar) fashion with Jurassic World Dominion, which brought back many of the original characters and dinosaurs from the original Jurassic Park films.

The Dominion team did so with a mix of practical and visual effects, in keeping with the franchise's storied tradition of mixing in-camera movie magic with groundbreaking digital animation techniques. In addition to a visual effects team led by ILM's David Vickery, Dominion relied on John Nolan Studio to create practical, animatronic creatures that added a physical component to the film's menagerie.

How Jurassic World Dominion’s VFX made old dinosaurs new again

The Jurassic World trilogy concluded in epic, roaring fashion with Jurassic World Dominion, which brought the franchise full circle in multiple ways. Not only did Dominion bring back Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow behind the camera, but it also reunited the modern trilogy's stars, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, with those of the original Jurassic Park: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum.

Dominion also featured the return of some popular dinosaurs from the original trilogy, as well as the introduction of a few amazing -- and terrifying -- new dinosaurs, too. Blending all of these fresh and familiar elements together was no small feat. Digital Trends spoke to the film's visual effects supervisor, Academy Award nominee David Vickery, about the "digital paleontology" his team performed while revisiting the franchise's past in Jurassic World Dominion.
