Amazon reveals the main characters of The Rings of Power

Two decades ago, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s tales to the big screen. This fall, Amazon Prime Video is carving out its place in Tolkien’s lore with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. And while the first trailer won’t debut until Sunday, Vanity Fair has shared the first details about the main characters who will headline The Rings of Power.

Since this series takes place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, the events of the core LOTR trilogy won’t happen until thousands of years later. That doesn’t leave many options for characters who can appear in both, except for the nearly immortal elves. That’s why Morfydd Clark is headlining the series as Galadriel, a younger version of the character portrayed by Cate Blanchett in the movies. At this time in her life, Galadriel is a warrior and the leader of the Northern armies. She also senses the coming darkness and vows to fight it.

Hugo Weaving’s elf king, Elrond, will also be present as a much younger character portrayed by Robert Aramayo.

Robert Aramayo plays Elrond, the elven statesman who is just beginning to build his reputation—starting with mending the relationship between his people and the dwarves of Khazad-dûm.

Additionally, several new characters have been created for the series, including the elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) and a dwarven princess named Disa (Sophia Nomvete).

#TheRingsOfPower, set within Tolkien’s Second Age, will juggle 22 stars and multiple storylines—from deep within the dwarf mines to the elven kingdom of Lindon. Here, the adventures of the fellowship are still some 2,000 years in the future.

All told, there will be 22 main cast members as showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay bring viewers into a seldom-explored period in Middle-earth’s history. The Vanity Fair story also confirmed that Owain Arthur will play Prince Durin IV, alongside Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn, Charlie Vickers as Halbrand, Maxim Baldry as Isildur, Simon Merrells as Trevyn, and Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor. Note that in the LOTR backstory, Celebrimbor was the elf who was tricked into helping Sauron create the Rings of Power. Presumably, viewers will get to see that momentous occasion on screen for the first time.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on September 2 on Prime Video.

A woman points a dagger at a man in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

We're thankfully living in an era when more and more foreign movies and TV shows can become genuine phenomena in the U.S. Thanks to the increasing use of subtitles, and the global distribution of many of these movies, we can see the best of what cinema has to offer from all around the world.

Amazon Prime Video is home to many of these titles, as well as a broader selection of great movies that cut across every imaginable genre. If you're struggling to find just one movie to watch, you should start with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The movie was a major phenomenon in the U.S. in an era when few international movies got that treatment, and it's also leaving Prime Video at the end of May. Here are three reasons you should check it out.

A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

As we head toward the end of June, it's worth reflecting on how we want to spend the rest of summer. For some, that's going to mean enjoying nice weather or getting some time in at the beach. For others, it might mean escaping from the heat, at least for a while, to check out a great movie.

If you fall into that second category, then we've pulled together a list of three great, underrated, titles available on Amazon Prime Video that are all worth checking out. Prime Video is home to some of the best movies available online, but it can be hard to find the ones you want. These three will at least give you a great place to start.
