The trailer begins with yet another seemingly impossible mission that Hunt and his team must undertake, complete with metal detectors, a massive amount of water, a death-defying dive, and all sorts of additionally deadly traps and high-tech security. It’s all just another challenge for the Impossible Mission Force, though, as the team’s most formidable opponent yet might indeed be the forces of bureaucracy aligned against it.
After the team is put in the crosshairs by a government agency, they discover that a sinister organization might be at the heart of their troubles, and Hunt has to get the band back together for another harrowing adventure.
Along with the aforementioned deep-dive sequence, the trailer also features a bit more footage from the highly publicized set piece that had Cruise (as Hunt) clinging to the side of an airplane as it accelerates skyward.
Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Jack Reacher), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation picks up where 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol left off as Hunt learns about the existence of the shadowy group known as The Syndicate and begins assembling his team. Along with Cruise, Rogue Nation stars Jeremy Renner (The Avengers), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Simon Pegg (The World’s End), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Simon McBurney (The Theory of Everything), and Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules).
Rogue Nation is the fourth film in the franchise, which has earned more than $2 billion worldwide since Mission: Impossible hit theaters in 1996.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation will arrives in standard and IMAX theaters July 31.
