Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins is to direct the new Star Wars movie Rogue Squadron.
The announcement came along with a flurry of others during Disney’s streamed Investor 2020 event on Thursday, December 10.
According to StarWars.com, the new movie will introduce “a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.”
In a short video (below) that landed on Twitter at the same time as Disney’s announcement, Jenkins spoke about being about the daughter of a fighter pilot, and how her childhood experience of seeing her father and his squadron roar across the sky in their F4 aircraft is “still the most thrilling thing I’ve experienced in my entire life.”
She said when he lost his life in service to his country, “it ignited a desire to turn all of that tragedy and thrill into one day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.”
But only now, she says, has she found the right story — and that is Rogue Squadron.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said on Thursday that Jenkins “has established herself as one of the top directors working in the film industry today,” adding: “She’s a visionary who knows how to strike the balance between action and heart, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the Star Wars galaxy.”
Movie fans keen to see what Jenkins cooks up will have to be patient, however, as Rogue Squadron won’t hit screens until Christmas 2023.
