With tight-ski outfits, Danny DeVito as a hot-shot corporate developer, and hot tub scenes galore, the teaser looks remarkably close to the real thing — right down to the neon title card. And if you look closely, you can even catch a cameo by ’80s comic actor Dean Cameron, best known for his role as “Chainsaw” in 1987’s Summer School and, of course, 1990’s Ski School.
Longtime fans of the series are hoping that the teaser is indicative of a larger episode, but given the fact that the show itself is set in present day, it’s hard to tell yet whether or not the gang will make the trip back in time for a special episode. That said, if the the outrageous nature of It’s Always Sunny plots have proved anything, it’s that the show’s writers can basically do whatever they want and get away with it.
The comedy series, which started in 2005, centers on a group of friends who own a bar in Philadelphia, with hilarious out-of-nowhere plots and oddball characters creating a seemingly endless well of creative opportunities for the show’s writers. That’s part of the reason why the series has stayed fresh for so long, with longtime fans returning season after season to see what the cast will be up to next.
Created by Rob McElhenney (who also plays Mac in the show), the show was originally developed up as a short film which he later pitched to FX as a TV series. The network ordered a first season, and after a slow start, the show has now lasted for 114 episodes, with the last two appearing on the new FXX station.
After so many episodes, maybe a ski special wouldn’t be a bad idea. But even if they don’t go that far, at least the new trailer is hilarious.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia returns to the network with new episodes in January of next year.
