Peter Jackson might direct an episode of Doctor Who

With two extended sagas from the world of J.R.R. Tolkien behind him, filmmaker Peter Jackson has seemingly earned himself a well-deserved break. However, a new video posted on Facebook by the Oscar-winning director would seem to indicate that Jackson is already considering a new project — one that will require the services of a well-known doctor.

The Doctor, in fact.

In a short, funny video posted by Jackson, the director hints that he might have plans to direct an episode of Doctor Who, the popular, long-running BBC sci-fi series that’s currently in the midst of its 35th season.

The video features Jackson’s daughter, Katie, reading through his emails while the director polishes his Academy Awards. Upon discovering messages from Doctor Who showrunner and lead writer Steven Moffat asking Jackson to direct an episode of the series, the pair discuss why he hasn’t responded to Moffat’s messages and the likelihood of the director leaving New Zealand in order to spend 12 days in Cardiff filming an episode of the show.

Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, who delivers the contract from the BBC for Jackson to sign before being chased from the director’s home by a Dalek. The video ends with Jackson and his daughter remarking that it’s a Doctor Who night, so that must mean that a new episode of The Walking Dead is on, too.

While the video is certainly funny, and suggestive, it remains to be confirmed whether Jackson is indeed planning to direct an episode of Doctor Who, which concludes its current season this upcoming weekend. Given that Moffat and Jackson have worked together in the past on 2011’s The Adventures of Tintin, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that the director — an admitted fan of Doctor Who — could get behind the camera for an episode next season.

The season finale of Doctor Who airs December 5 on BBC and BBC America.
