Rotten Tomatoes teams with Cryptozoic to launch card game

Are you an expert when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes? Do you know where The Shawshank Redemption and The Batman fall on the Tomatometer? Soon, fans will be able to test their knowledge of the Tomatometer in a new game called Rotten Tomatoes: The Card Game.

Rotten Tomatoes today announced a partnership with Cryptozoic Entertainment, one of the industry leaders in trading cards, collectibles, and tabletop games, to launch this new card game. The party game asks players to rank movies based on their Tomatometer score. With 350 Movie Cards, the game can be played with up to 20 players. Rotten Tomatoes: The Card Game combines the social camaraderie of parties with trivia to create an exciting activity that cinephiles will love.

“At Rotten Tomatoes, we are obsessed with pop culture and finding fun and interactive ways to connect with movie fans, while enabling them to fully immerse themselves in the world of entertainment,” said Aaron Kohn, Rotten Tomatoes’ vice president of Business Operations & Growth Strategy, in a press release. “Rotten Tomatoes: The Card Game offers players a one-of-a-kind experience, infusing the world-famous Tomatometer scores with lively gameplay, while testing players’ movie knowledge.”

To play, each player receives three cards arranged by their Tomatometer score, which forms their Movie Collection. During a player’s turn, the player to the right will draw a card and read off details about the movie without revealing the Tomatometer score. If the active player correctly guesses where the movie falls among their cards, then the player adds the card to their Movie Collection. With the addition of Wild Cards, more players receive chances to add to their Movie Collection by guessing details about the movie such as its release year, cast, or Tomatometer score.

Rotten Tomatoes: The Card Game is scheduled to be available at retailers in early 2023 for a suggested retail price of $25. Pre-orders are now being accepted at Cryptozoic Shop

Rotten Tomatoes expands Critics Outreach and Grant Program

As one of the top review-aggregation websites for film and television, Rotten Tomatoes announced in a press release its renewed donation to the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Media Inclusion Initiative. This contribution solidifies Rotten Tomatoes' pledge to expand its Critics Outreach and Grant Program to raise inclusion in entertainment criticism.

TIFF's Media Inclusion Initiative was established to provide financial backing for critics in underrepresented groups. Rotten Tomatoes has donated over $100,00 since the program's inception.
“According to a recent survey we conducted with 350 Tomatometer-approved critics, 92% contend that the cost of travel and lodging still prohibits them from attending key festivals and conventions,” said Jenny Jediny, Rotten Tomatoes Director of Critic Engagement, in a press release.

Rotten Tomatoes, one of the leading film and television reviews-aggregation sites, announced today its collaboration with the industry leader in movie scenes and trailers on YouTube, Movieclips, to form a new video network known as the Rotten Tomatoes YouTube Network. The resulting creation will serve as the perfect landing spot for entertainment fans to watch over 100,000 short and long-form videos from their favorite films and television programs as well as view teasers for upcoming projects.

With these two entertainment staples joining forces, the Rotten Tomatoes YouTube Network will now serve over 90 million subscribers. Previously, Movieclips curated its content around movie clips and trailers. By collaborating with Rotten Tomatoes, the network will increase its coverage and add television and streaming to its platform. The network will feature 10 active channels such as Rotten Tomatoes Movieclips, Rotten Tomatoes Trailers, Rotten Tomatoes TV, Rotten Tomatoes Classic Trailers, and more. Plus, expect to see celebrity interviews, entertainment news, event coverage, and fan debates on the network.

If you're Canadian auteur David Cronenberg, purveyor of oozy body horror, psycho-sexual titillation, and all manner of other subversive content, it's hard to imagine better pre-release hype around your new film than numerous reports of nauseated audiences fleeing screenings. Of course, this was the Cannes Film Festival, where people enjoy walking out of movies for virtually any provocation. And the movie, Crimes of the Future, once widely reviewed, proved to be not quite as repugnant as those early reports described, despite its graphic depiction of organ removal surgery as live entertainment.

Still, the fact remains that few filmmakers alive could stir up such pre-release controversy. Even after not having made a feature film since 2014 -- and not one in this vein for several decades -- people knew exactly what they were getting into with a David Cronenberg movie. (The horrible goop mutants in the animated comedy series Rick and Morty are called Cronenbergs if that gives you some indication of the associations conjured by the man.) In celebration of the master's return to the splendidly sickening, we list his best films according to Rotten Tomatoes.
