Selma director Ava DuVernay is reportedly being courted by Marvel to direct one of two 2018 films: Black Panther or Captain Marvel. According to The Wrap, the likely project is Black Panther, since it hits theaters before Captain Marvel.
The report suggests that DuVernay is far from a lock for the job at this point, despite interest from both parties. If she did take on the project, however, DuVernay would be in line to become the first female director of a Marvel movie. (Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was previously attached to direct Thor: The Dark World, but left the project due to creative differences with the studio.)
DuVernay already has a long list of credits on the promotional and publicity side of filmmaking (including a credit for “promotional services” on Spider-Man 2), but last year’s Oscar-nominated chronicle of Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure equal voting rights in 1965 elevated her to the mainstream spotlight as a feature-film director.
Scheduled to hit theaters July 6, 2018, Black Panther casts Chadwick Boseman (42) as T’Challa, the prince of the African nation of Wakanda who serves as his country’s greatest hero and protector, The Black Panther. Boseman will make his debut as T’Challa in next year’s Captain America: Civil War.
The star of Captain Marvel has yet to be cast, but the film will likely tell the origin story of superhero Carol Danvers, who’s given superhuman powers by the alien race known as the Kree. The film’s script is currently being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve, with an announced premiere date of November 2, 2018.
