Nicolas Cage embraces chaos in Sympathy for the Devil trailer

As an actor, Nicolas Cage has had a wildly eclectic career that ranges from would-be Superman to an occasional vampire in Renfield. For his next movie, Sympathy for the Devil, Cage is playing to his strengths as an enigmatic passenger who holds Joel Kinnamen’s driver at gunpoint. In the trailer below, Cage is completely convincing as an off-the-wall and violent hit man who could kill the driver at any time. However, it also appears that the passenger did not hijack the driver at random. Instead, he seems to have a purpose in mind.

SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL Official Trailer

The trailer does go out of its way to present the driver as an unassuming family man. When the passenger gets in his car, the driver is attempting to get to the hospital before his wife gives birth. Unfortunately for the happy couple, the passenger has other plans. And when the driver attempts to get help or escape, the people around him die at the hands of the passenger.

The only real hint we have about the passenger’s motivation is that the driver is attempting to convince him that he isn’t the person that the passenger thinks he is. But if this was a mere case of mistaken identity, then how would the driver know why he was targeted? More importantly, the driver needs to figure out how he can get out of this situation without losing everything he has.

Kaiwi Lyman co-stars in the film alongside Cameron Lee Price, Burns Burns, Rich Hopkins, Nancy Good, Alexis Zollicoffer, Oliver McCallum,
Annisse White, and Danny Tesla.

Yuval Adler directed Sympathy for the Devil from a script by Luke Paradise. Sympathy for the Devil will get a simultaneous theatrical and on-demand release on July 28.

Prey for the Devil trailer teases an exorcism from hell
A woman screams in Prey for the Devil.

In the opening line for the Prey for the Devil trailer, Father Quinn tells his students, "Let's descend into the mouth of hell, shall we?" For most people, the answer to that question is a hard pass. For Sister Ann and the priests at St. Michael the Archangel School of Exorcism, they have no choice but to take on the devil.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent review: Nic Cage as Nic Cage
Nicolas Cage looks at the camera while wearing a sunglasses in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

In The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nicolas Cage plays Nicolas Cage, prolific actor, Hollywood star, and icon of the internet. If that concept alone puts you in stitches, you may be the right audience for this meta trifle of a comedy.

It’s the kind of movie that treats the mere mention of other movies (like Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Guarding Tess) as a punch line, and that regards characters repeatedly calling Nicolas Cage “Nic Cage” to his face as the height of hilarity. At one point, the star stumbles upon a shrine to his own output, a long wall of lovingly showcased props and merchandise with his likeness on them, and winds up gawking at an unconvincing life-size replica of himself, brandishing the golden pistols from Face/Off. It’s the whole film in a nutshell: A shrine to the cult of Cage, a memorabilia room of a movie.
A long time coming
Cage has been working toward a role like this for a while. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent feels like the logical endpoint to one fork in his twisting career path, the one that’s been bending into an ouroboros of cult fame, allowing him to capitalize on how fans and detractors alike caricature his wild-man talents. Recent movies like Willy’s Wonderland and Prisoners of the Ghostland put those talents to little use, instead asking only that he show up, stand around, and be Nicolas Cage -- they essentially turn him into an accessory. Here, the sales pitch is more direct: You pay for Nic Cage and Nic Cage is exactly what you get, without the distraction of a fictional character.
