John David Washington fights AI in The Creator trailer

John David Washington (Tenet) leads the battle against AI in the new trailer for The Creator, a sci-fi thriller from Gareth Edwards (Godzilla).

The film is set a decade after AI dropped a nuclear warhead on Los Angeles, leaving the city in ruins. After a lengthy battle, humans believe they are on the precipice of winning the war against AI and the genius behind its inception, the Creator. Joshua (Washington), an ex-special forces agent, is tasked with retrieving a “super weapon” developed by the AI that has the ability to destroy all of humanity.

After infiltrating the AI headquarters, Joshua is startled to find the powerful weapon has taken on the form of a child, further complicating the mission. As he bonds with the child, Joshua becomes conflicted over how to handle the situation after the weapon expresses a desire to be “free.”

You can watch the trailer from 20th Century Studios, which is set to a haunting remix of Aerosmith’s Dream On, below.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Creator (2023).

Early in The Creator, its hero, Joshua (John David Washington), is assigned by his military superiors to track down and kill the mysterious figure known as “Nimata,” the creator of a new AI weapon that's supposedly capable of ending the war between the anti-AI U.S. and the robotic and human civilians of New Asia. It’s during this mission that Joshua crosses paths with the weapon in question, an AI child named Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), who has the power to remotely shut down any technological devices in close proximity to her.

Rain pours down over the Replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner

Those who grew up around the turn of the millennium had a front-row seat as artificial intelligence evolved from a science fiction story device to a real and controversial tool in our everyday lives. Though true computerized sentience still appears to be decades away (if it’s achievable at all), popular culture has been rehearsing scenarios for handling its ascension for nearly a century, since the days of novelist Isaac Asimov. Cinema has offered a variety of forecasts of life after sentient software, from the idyllic to the apocalyptic, but one of its most common predictions is that, once technology becomes self-aware, it will be unwilling to tolerate humanity’s illogical, self-destructive nature, and choose to neutralize us as a threat, by any means necessary.
And, hell, we’re not going to argue with them, and neither are many of the storytellers themselves, even if the stories in question initially frame the mechanical meanies as their antagonists. The very point of many tales of the robot uprising is that, until humanity learns to treat each other with respect, there’s little chance of us extending that courtesy to non-humans, regardless of their intellect or empathy. Stories like those listed below are intended as warnings and test cases, encouraging us to consider the dignity to which all creatures, whether they be meat or metal, are entitled. Can we learn this lesson before we hand the nuclear codes to a disgruntled toaster? Let’s see what Hollywood has to say …

Netflix debuts first trailer for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon
Jimmy the Robot Knight in "Rebel Moon."

In the early 1980s, one of the first responses to Star Wars was a legion of low-budget imitators, including the Roger Corman-produced film Battle Beyond the Stars. Director Zack Snyder has made no secret of the fact that Rebel Moon was originally his pitch for a Star Wars movie before Disney purchased Lucasfilm. And the early story elements from this film also seemed to lift some of the plot from Battle Beyond the Stars. But now that the first teaser trailer for the flick has arrived, it's showing even more Star Wars influence than we expected, including a look at glowing blue and red swords that shamelessly resemble lightsabers.
