Forget season 2: We can’t wait for season 3 and 4 of The Last of Us

This article contains spoilers for season 1 of The Last of Us.

HBO’s The Last of Us recently concluded its terrific first season on Sunday night. The series has already been renewed for a second season, which will be developed from the video game The Last of Us Part II. However, showrunners Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (Uncharted) revealed the second season would not cover the entirety of Part II and they need a third and potentially fourth season to complete the story.

In an interview with GQ, Mazin and Druckmann were asked if season 2 would contain all of the elements from Part II, a large game with multiple storylines. After Mazin said it would not include everything from the second game, Druckmann said, “It’s more than one season.” Mazin would not say exactly how many seasons, but he added, “You [the interviewer] have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.”

In the season 1 finale, Joel (The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal) saves Ellie from surgery that would kill her, even though it may be the only way of finding a cure for the virus that has ravaged humanity. On his way out of the hospital, Joel kills Firefly leader Marlene (Station 19’s Merle Dandridge), fearing she would come after Ellie in the future. On the way to Tommy’s settlement, Joel lies to Ellie about what happened at the hospital, saying the Fireflies found other immune people, but could not find a cure. Ellie makes Joel swear that his story is true, which he does.

The Last of Us was a monster hit for HBO, increasing in ratings as the series progressed. The season finale had an audience of 8.2 million viewers, a series high. The premiere was the second most-watched debut (4.7 million viewers) since 2010, only behind House of the Dragon.

3 Netflix shows we can’t wait to see in April
Two teen males read a glowing book in Dead Boy Detectives.

It's not a surprise to find out that Netflix has been dominating in 2024. From hit shows like The Gentlemen with Theo James to popular movies like Damsel with Millie Bobby Brown, the streamer has put out an impressive lineup of original programming that crosses almost every genre and boasts popular stars, both young and old.

While its April programming schedule will have comparatively fewer titles than in the last few months, Netflix still has an intriguing selection that is sure to interest anyone with a taste for adventure and mystery. There's another adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley, a French thriller set in a snowy mountain range, and a comic book adaptation from the fanciful mind of Neil Gaiman.

Why we still can’t forget Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Two people sleep on a bed in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

If you ask your average millennial writer or film lover what their favorite movie is, chances are a lot of them are going to say Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Take it from me, a 31-year-old writer and film lover. In truth, it's not hard to realize why: Eternal Sunshine came out when I was 12, and it instantly seemed like a step forward in my cinematic education. It felt so adult and philosophical, even literary, a profound picture that was too elevated for my young mind to understand. However, unlike many other movies, which become lesser as one matures, Eternal Sunshine feels just the same 20 years later. It's a profound and poignant experience that, even now, with the supposed wisdom life has technically given me, seems no less intricate than it did back then.

Michel Gondry's mind-bending, thought-provoking exploration of heartache and loss came out in March 2004 and was a cult classic from the get-go; time has only been kind to it, improving its standing and turning it into a modern-day masterpiece. Beyond the incredibly original premise, Eternal Sunshine has aged like fine wine for the potent message at its core. Because above the memory-hopping sci-fi shenanigans, the film is a story about love: love acquired, love lost, love missing, and love remembered.

The Gentlemen | A new series from Guy Ritchie Official Teaser | Netflix

It's been a rough two months in the entertainment industry. No, I'm not talking about layoffs or strikes; I'm talking about the dearth of high-quality 2024 movies and TV shows out there. Since January 1, there have been more critical misses than hits: Mean Girls, The Book of Clarence, Good Grief, Argylle, Madame Web ... the list seems endless. Only True Detective: Night Country and Masters of the Air have broken through and satisfied audiences.
