‘The Orville’ season 2 gets a new, drama-heavy teaser trailer

Preview: New Missions, Epic Adventures | Season 2 | THE ORVILLE

No one quite knew what to expect when Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane announced plans for The Orville, but the show’s surprisingly earnest homage to Star Trek and other sci-fi series — mixed with MacFarlane’s signature humor, of course — proved to be a hit with audiences. The second season of The Orville premieres December 30 and now we have a new teaser to keep excitement high as the season 2 premiere gets closer.

Created by MacFarlane, The Orville chronicles the cosmic adventures of the crew of the U.S.S. Orville, an exploratory vessel in the 25th century. MacFarlane himself leads the cast as Ed Mercer, the ship’s captain. His eccentric crew includes his ex-wife Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), helmsman Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes), security officer Alara Kitan (Halston Sage), chief medical officer Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald), second officer Bortus (Peter Macon), navigator John LaMarr (J. Lee), and science officer Isaac (Mark Jackson).

In late October, a new teaser for season 2 of The Orville was released, offering a bit more footage from the second story arc of the series. The debut of the teaser followed a few months after the release of the first, full trailer for season 2 of The Orville, which premiered during San Diego’s Comic-Con International in July 2018.

In February, the show added a new crew member to the USS Orville for the show’s sophomore story arc.

According to DeadlineShameless and Gossip Girl actress Jessica Szohr (pictured below) will officially join the cast for the show’s second season. She’ll play an unidentified crew member.

The Orville was renewed for a second season in November 2017, just seven episodes into its first season. The series was the first new series of the 2017 season to earn a renewal from Fox, and although it wasn’t received well by critics, it was a bona fide hit with audiences and quickly became the network’s highest-rated show in the 9 p.m. Thursday time slot. Its debut gave it the most-viewed drama premiere for Fox since the debut of Empire in 2015.

“Once again Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers,” Michael Thorn, Fox Broadcasting Company’s president of entertainment, said in a statement. “He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama, and his trademark humor. We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can’t wait to see where The Orville travels in the second season.”

During a panel for The Orville held at New York Comic Con in October 2017, MacFarlane offered a hint of where he would like to see the series go in its second season.

“I think next season we’re going to deal with Isaac,” he said. “There are character arcs that are introduced in [the first] season that I think are going to go a long way.”

Updated on October 29, 2018: Added a new teaser for season 2 of the series.

Hulu sets a June premiere for The Orville: New Horizons
The cast of The Orville assembles on the spaceship's deck.

It's been nearly three years since The Orville season 2 came to an end on Fox. Hulu renewed the series in 2019, but production was stalled due to various COVID-19 delays. Until recently, the series' third season was set to premiere on March 10, but now Hulu has officially set The Orville: New Horizons to premiere on June 2.

The new premiere date was accompanied by a video preview that appears to be the opening moments of season 3. Within this scene, the Orville is in dire straits during an all-out space battle. But some of the imagery at the end makes us suspect that not everything is what it appears to be. Following the scene, you can watch the show's new opening credits sequence.

Guinan returns in new Star Trek: Picard season 2 trailer
Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard season 2.

For the first time in 20 years, Whoopi Goldberg is back in the Star Trek universe. In the new trailer for Star Trek: Picard season 2, Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard faces a time-bending problem. But there's no one better-suited to give him advice than his old friend, Guinan (Goldberg). And while the future of humanity and the Federation may be at stake, Guinan tells Picard that the "answers are not in the stars. And they never have been."

The trailer also seems to indicate that John de Lancie's Q was not responsible for the incident that put Picard and his crew into a new timeline. However, Q is definitely taking advantage of the chaos to put Picard through another test. The nearly omnipotent being hasn't appeared to Picard since the final episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. And Q always relishes his mind games, because the trial of humanity never ends.
