Things just keep getting worse in new teaser for The Walking Dead’s sixth season

We’re mere weeks away from the premiere of the sixth season of The Walking Dead, and AMC has released a sneak peek at the return of its post-apocalyptic zombie drama with a brief teaser that sets the mood for the next 16-episode story arc.

Titled “You Don’t Have A Choice,” the 30-second teaser showcases the threats from both zombies and fellow survivors alike that the cast will face in the upcoming season, which will kick off with a premiere featuring more than 650 zombies — a record for the series.

The upcoming season is set to bring back core cast members Andrew Lincoln as Rick, Chandler Riggs as Carl, Danai Gurira as Michonne, Melissa McBride as Carol, Lauren Cohan as Maggie, Steven Yeun as Glenn, and Norman Reedus as Daryl, as well as a long list of returning supporting cast members and newcomers to the series.

Among the other announced cast members for the sixth season are Sonequa Martin-Green as Sasha, Lennie James as Morgan, Seth Gilliam as Father Gabriel, Michael Cudlitz as Abraham, Josh McDermitt as Eugene, Alanna Masterson as Tara, Christian Serratos as Rosita, Tovah Feldshuh as Deanna, Ross Marquand as Aaron, Alexandra Breckenridge as Jesse, and Austin Nichols as Spencer. Characters played by Ethan Embry, Corey Hawkins, and Merritt Wever will all join the cast in the upcoming season, too.

Since premiering in 2010, The Walking Dead has earned 11 Primetime Emmy nominations and two Primetime Emmy Awards — both for makeup and prosthetic effects — as well as a Golden Globe nomination and multiple Screen Actors Guild Award nominations on the way to becoming one of the most popular cable television series in recent years. The series is based on the comic book series of the same name created by series producer Robert Kirkman, as well as Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The comic book series is still being written by Kirkman and published by Image Comics.

The Walking Dead recently welcomed a “companion series” to AMC titled Fear the Walking Dead, which serves as a prequel of sorts that unfolds on the opposite side of the country before and during the events of The Walking Dead.

The sixth season of The Walking Dead premieres October 11 on AMC.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1, episode 1 release date, time, channel, and plot
Maggie and Negan standing together looking down at something in the dark in a scene from The Walking Dead: Dead City.

The Walking Dead franchise is forcing two unlikely allies to team up in its latest spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City. Lauren Cohan reprises her role as Maggie Green, the longtime main group member and widow of Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun). Jeffrey Dean Morgan is Negan, the once-ruthless leader of the Saviors who eventually reformed and joined forces with the main group. What makes Maggie and Negan an improbable duo? Negan beat Glenn to death with a barbed baseball bat named Lucille.

Several years after the events of The Walking Dead finale, Maggie now finds herself in a dire situation. Her son has been kidnapped and taken to postapocalyptic and secluded Manhattan. While attempting a rescue, Maggie stumbles upon Negan. Negan agrees to help the desperate Maggie find her son in Manhattan. A Walking Dead show means zombies are not far behind, as Manhattan is full of the dead. Yet, it's those that are still alive who may pose the biggest threat.

Maggie and Negan unite in The Walking Dead: Dead City’s new trailer
Lauren Cohen and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Anyone who has ever watched The Walking Dead probably knows why the premise of the upcoming spinoff miniseries, The Walking Dead: Dead City, is more than a little bit flimsy. That's because it pairs Maggie Rhees (Lauren Cohan) with the man who murdered her husband, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). And despite Negan's efforts to reform, Maggie has never entirely let go of that grudge. But in the new trailer for Dead City, it appears that their reunion is not a coincidence. Someone from Negan's past is luring him into a trap, and he's using Maggie to set the bait.
