The Norse god Thor will soon be in love with this woman

Ragnarök, the Norse myth-inspired apocalypse, is coming to the big screen — but it sounds like Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) will still have time for a little romance.

Creed star Tessa Thompson has been cast in the upcoming film Thor: Ragnarok, and she’ll play a new love interest for the god of thunder, according to Deadline. It’s a tough reminder for fans of the Thor and Jane pairing that Natalie Portman is not set to return, but apparently the hammer-wielding hero has achieved closure and is ready to move on. Although he and Jane had a good run, we’re curious to see what a new leading lady will bring.

Few details have been released yet about Thompson’s character, but Deadline sources say she’ll be something of a superhero herself, and that this won’t be her only appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thompson has been steadily adding to her film credits over the past several years, and her role as Bianca in 2015’s Creed seems to have opened doors to high profile projects. (The film appealed to critics and moviegoers alike, and a sequel is already in the works.) In addition to Thor: Ragnarok, she’ll appear in writer-director Alex Garland’s much anticipated follow-up to Ex Machina, Annihilation, incidentally, co-starring with none other than Portman. Thompson’s other notable roles include 2014’s Selma and Dear White People, as well as 2010’s For Colored Girls.

Thor: Ragnarok will again center on the Norse god, with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sif (Jaimie Alexander) returning as well. Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo) will offer up some MCU crossover with his appearance in the film. Meanwhile, Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett is also joining the Thor franchise in the upcoming film.

The Marvel flick is helmed by Flight of the Conchords director Taika Waititi and is set to open at the box office on November 3, 2017.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

As we head toward the end of June, it's worth reflecting on how we want to spend the rest of summer. For some, that's going to mean enjoying nice weather or getting some time in at the beach. For others, it might mean escaping from the heat, at least for a while, to check out a great movie.

The best Netflix original series right now

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.
