Franchise director and producer Michael Bay announced the return of the infamous Decepticon leader this week, and offered up a visual peek at the new look the character will be sporting in The Last Knight. Although the image doesn’t reveal much, it does suggest that Megatron is getting yet another makeover.
Bay posted the teaser image on Instagram in a short video focusing on the character’s purple-hued eyes, set against the backdrop of guttural, robotic breathing.
“It’s starting. This week production. Megatron is back. #transformers #decepticons,” wrote Bay in the video’s caption.
And production has indeed begun, as Bay also posted a video from the set of the film in Cuba. According to Bay’s caption for the video, the brief clip also includes the first look at a robot character in its vehicle form: an old-school motorcycle with a sidecar.
Cuba! There’s a Robot in there.

Along with bringing Bay back to the director’s chair, Transformers: The Last Knight will bring back Age of Extinction star Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, Josh Duhamel as Lieutenant Colonel Lennox, and introduce Isabela Moner (Growing Up Fisher) in a co-starring role. Neighbors actor Jerrod Carmichael is also set to play an unidentified, featured role in the film. The script for the film was penned by Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, along with Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down).
Over the course of four live-action movies, the Transformers franchise has earned almost $3.8 billion worldwide, for an average of $944 million per film.
Transformers: The Last Knight is currently scheduled to hit theaters June 23, 2017.
